Comments on 'up-stander' intervention when a parent appears to be abusive?

Janet Rosenzweig ·
A video of a Dad apparently abusing his daughter in a department store is bringing attention to the question of when it is appropriate for observers to intervene. I've been asked to write a post on this for the Healthy Kids blog at philly.com and think it would be most meaningful to include quotes from Philly area colleagues. Want to share a brief, quotable thought ? Please reply by Friday and include your name and title if the editors use your comment. Thank you! Reference links:...

Research on Effectiveness of TIC in Camden

Dan Rhoton ·
Hello, everyone! Hopeworks N Camden is embarking on formal academic study of the difference that our implementation of Trauma Informed Care has had on our outcomes with youth. We are lucky in that we have strong "before" and "after" datasets. Natasha Fletcher, of the Center for Urban Research and Education, is leading the study. I have posted a brief summary of the study below. Who is excited by this? Who would like to continue to hear more about our progress in this? We think it is a really...

In case you haven't seen this: the Vermont legislature is considering a bill that would set up ACE screening in the state's health care system.

Re: Children and Toxic Stress: The Discussion Continues

Katherine Pflaumer ·
Sorry for this spammy post, but: I think that a greater effort needs to be made to change public attitudes as well. Obviously this needs to start with the professions, as noted above, but it can't be limited to them. One of the hardest things about growing up with trauma is that you feel defective and isolated, and other people often treat you that way, too. As a traumatized child it gets harder to establish and maintain productive/trusting relationships, even though traumatized children...

Re: Fostering Resilience

Gregory~ I'm just replying as a parent ~ I work on allowing my son to come up with his own ideas on solving problems (real or unfactual problems), encouraging him to be in his creative side ( drawing, listening to music, both of which he enjoys) after difficult times he may be experiencing, and being consciousness on how I handle life adversities with my actions ( as even though he's a teenager, I'm sure he's still absorbing actions like a sponge :) ....and when I mean I work on it....it...

Re: What does a "trauma-informed" Philadelphia look like?

Devpreet Kaur ·
Wow, Shoshana! The very thought of what you propose is thrilling! So do we start top-down or bottom-up? I have mixed feelings and experiences: In my old career of Performance Development and Training I know that top-down is typically ideal to gain traction and pull-through of any new initiative BUT it is fraught with political/bureaucratic snags...in my work with teaching meditation to kids and to Student Assistance Counselors (SACs) I can say that they are where the proverbial "rubber meets...

Re: Anything happening with Mindfulness/Yoga in Philadelphia Area Schools?

Jennifer Boyle-King ·
Trauma-sensitive yoga is different in that it takes the traumatized person into careful consideration in every aspect of the work, from the set up of a classroom/studio to the poses that are performed to the language the teacher uses. The focus is on integrating and empowering, allowing those impacted by trauma to 'reclaim the body' and feel as if they can make choices about what happens to them---beginning on the mat. The sort of guru of trauma-sensitive or trauma-informed yoga is David...

Re: Charter Schools, ACEs, and Trauma

Gina Tallarida ·
Daun, I heard they were coming up with an ACEs test since the ACE's left out some categories that are more prominent in the urban community. I cant remember if this was going to be added to ACEs or if there was going to be one just for that population. Is this true??

Re: Charter Schools, ACEs, and Trauma

Gina Tallarida ·
Just read through the links up uploaded! " In all, over 37% of Philadelphia respondents reported four or more ACEs. The findings from this study suggest the need for services that address the unique environmental stressors experienced in urban neighborhoods to mitigate their impact on individuals and prevent ACEs." When finding out this number, were you expecting the number reported or believed it was going to be different?
