Philly District Attorney initiative is a 'one-stop' for jobs, social services [phillytrib.com]
Robert Mayweather wasn’t pressed to find a job Thursday night at the YMCA in West Philadelphia. However, he’s glad he satisfied his curiosity to “see what was going on.” Mayweather was one of a few hundred people who passed through the doors of the YMCA for the District Attorney’s Office’s One-Stop Job and Resources Hub. The hub opens up on the first Thursday of each month, in a different neighborhood each time. The goal of the event is to connect city residents in under-served neighborhoods...

Philadelphia ends practice of billing parents for the time their children spend in detention [WashingtonPost.com]
The city of Philadelphia announced Friday that it will stop billing parents for the cost of their children’s incarceration, just hours after a front-page Marshall Project story in The Washington Post highlighted the practice in the city and across the nation. Heather Keafer, a spokeswoman for the Philadelphia Department of Human Services, said the decision to stop charging parents will go into effect immediately. The agency already said late Thursday it plans to end its contract with Steve...

Love the post, Kate! As a longtime "builder" of IKEA furniture and a big talker about the need for trauma-informed tools for all sectors, you are spot on with you blog post! Good luck with your new job and hopefully there are resources on ACN that can help. And if you don't find them, reach out to the community and I bet someone has been struggling with something similar.

Re: How Do ACEs Impact Health Outcomes?
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is just one of the many long-term effects of ACEs and trauma, but certainly one that is more commonly thought of. As this post demonstrates, PTSD is not something that only affects soldier but is one way ACEs can linger into adulthood and impact health outcomes.

Re: Children and Toxic Stress: The Discussion Continues
Sorry for this spammy post, but: I think that a greater effort needs to be made to change public attitudes as well. Obviously this needs to start with the professions, as noted above, but it can't be limited to them. One of the hardest things about growing up with trauma is that you feel defective and isolated, and other people often treat you that way, too. As a traumatized child it gets harder to establish and maintain productive/trusting relationships, even though traumatized children...

Re: Why are you joining the Philadelphia ACES Connection Group?
As Philadelphia is striving to be a world class city, ACES cannot be overlooked! Working in philanthropy, I want to make sure that all of our grantees are thinking about ACES in one way or another. And to my surprise, I have already brought some pieces of knowledge provided on this page into my personal life. For example, the post about the Caregivers film, got me extremely excited for the full length video to come out and I am going to watch it with my younger sister who is a nurse for the...

Re: Real Resilience is now a PODCAST
Thanks for this post and the often untold stories of women & their children whose lives are changed by incarceration of a loved one, and who have to work to fund the costs of incarceration. Your video is a powerful introduction to what led to the podcasts. This led me to look for more on the ACE of incarceration and what is going on in our geographic area right now.

Re: Ordinary Magic-Resiliency Research - The Power of Connection
Thank you Michael for sharing your powerful post! Please know I cross-posted on our ACEs in Education group. Really appreciating the graphic from the Department of Education in Ohio, I'll be embedding into my curriculum development. With your poignant quote from Tracy Kidder, my thoughts would be to expand to all of us our opportunity and responsibility of being the "teacher" in the lives of whom we serve, and who we love, on our healing journeys. We are all students - we are all teachers.
