Service to others is rewarding, but struggling to manage stress, sometimes traumatic stress, can be challenging for health, mental health, first responders, and other service providers when providing care to others. This last year has raised awareness in this area.

This virtual cafe session shares the story from MATER (Maternal Addiction Treatment Education Program) at Jefferson University Hospital about how their workplace grapples with traumatic stress faced by staff, what's worked, and what hasn't, and how they do it.

About the Presenters

Dr. Meghan Gannon will host a discussion with both Dr. Diane Abatemarco and Dr. Daniel Martin around the Mindfulness Dialogue for Life training program (MBDFL), and how they have adapted and implemented this program at MATER (Maternal Addiction Treatment Education Program) at Thomas Jefferson University.

Mindfulness Dialogue for Life (MDFL) is a mindfulness based facilitation tool for staff to improve the workplace through strengthened communication and relationships. It can apply to and be adapted to any staff group, but is specifically helpful to those who sometimes suffer from vicarious trauma/ secondary traumatic stress through their service to others. The presentation will include a short experiential piece that is used in their application of MDFL.

Outcomes of using MDFL are a healthier and more productive work environment.
