Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is just one of the many long-term effects of ACEs and trauma, but certainly one that is more commonly thought of. As this post demonstrates, PTSD is not something that only affects soldier but is one way ACEs can linger into adulthood and impact health outcomes.

Sorry for this spammy post, but: I think that a greater effort needs to be made to change public attitudes as well. Obviously this needs to start with the professions, as noted above, but it can't be limited to them. One of the hardest things about growing up with trauma is that you feel defective and isolated, and other people often treat you that way, too. As a traumatized child it gets harder to establish and maintain productive/trusting relationships, even though traumatized children...

Thanks for this post and the often untold stories of women & their children whose lives are changed by incarceration of a loved one, and who have to work to fund the costs of incarceration. Your video is a powerful introduction to what led to the podcasts. This led me to look for more on the ACE of incarceration and what is going on in our geographic area right now.

Hi, could you please let me know when the next focus group meeting is. I would like to attend. I am a licensed clinician currently working in a methadone maintenance program. I am trained as a Trauma/TREM specialist and currently providing both individual and group therapy services to individuals with trauma histories and used drugs/alcohol to cope with the emotional consequences of the trauma. Greater Richmond Trauma Informed Community Network, first to join ACEs Cooperative of Communities, shows what it means to ROCK!
In 2012, Greater Richmond SCAN and five other community partners hatched a one-year plan to educate the Richmond, Virginia, community about ACEs science and to embed trauma-informed practices. Eight years later, the original group has evolved into the Greater Richmond Trauma-Informed Community Network (GRTICN) with 495 people and 170 organizations. And they're just scratching the surface.

A Letter to Kyle
To mark the anniversary of the passage of the landmark legislation of the Georgia Mental Health Parity Act, we are sharing a letter written a year ago by Roland Behm, Co-founder of the Georgia Mental Health Policy Partnership, Board Member and Former Board Chair, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Georgia Chapter. The letter is to his son, Kyle, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2010 as a junior in college and died by suicide in August 2019.
