Optimism About Covid-19 End Linked to Gender?

Hi Community!

We know many Caribbean people who have been forecasting the end of the lockdowns, closures and drama that has been associated with Covid-19.😷

Even as more vaccinesπŸ’‰ are being administered around the world, a new USA survey by Yahoo/YouGov has found that optimism over the return to normalcy (however that may look to you) is more aligned to gender than we realised.

The survey respondents came from different ages, races, income levels and political ideologies. Only 50% anticipate things will be normal again before the end of the year.  But here is what's interesting: 57% of men felt hopeful that normalcy is coming soon, while only 44% of women felt the same way.

According to the Yahoo!Life article, the difference in optimism between men and women was explained by mental health experts who said: "It's completely consistent with a really robust body of literature that shows women are much more likely to struggle with anxiety and depression than men."

Another reason could be how the efforts to quell the Covid-19 virus have impacted women, especially working mother's, whose struggles under the economic changes are disproportionately greater than men according to some studies.

Personally, I believe it also involves a process of thinking and this is where some men and women may differ. When one factors in ALL the details of reopening fully and safely in the current context, one may well think the end of 2021 is too soon, even though you want it to happen yesterday!

However long it takes, Caribbean people, we urge you to take the necessary steps to be well. Reach out to chat with friends or family or a clinician. There is absolutely no shame if you need to do so!

Sending you a safe, virtual hug for the weekend. πŸ€—
