La Soufriere now more dangerous, pyroclastic flows have begun. [Newsday article]

The danger posed by the La Soufriere volcano has increased significantly in the past day with the discovery that there have been sightings of pyroclastic flows on the leeward side of the peak.

The lead scientist on the scene, vulcanologist/geologist Professor Richard Robertson explained that pyroclastic flows "are not like the ash that damage things by the weight. These flows really are moving masses of destruction, they just destroy everything in their path. If you have the strongest house in the world, they will just bulldoze it off the ground."

Based on information from Professor Robertson, these flows have the ability to continue doing damage even when they reach the ocean. He said, “they would boil the sea and they would shoot across the sea as a foam of rapidly moving hot air and they will scald anything in their way.”

In a separate media interview, Professor Robertson told the Caribbean News Agency that the 2021 eruptions appear more similar to La Soufrière's 1902 deadly eruption, and could cause more destruction than 1979's activities. Some 1,600 people died in 1902.

God forbid this will occur. Please continue to pray for the country.
