Is Parenting Post-Covid A Catch-22?

Harvard Business Review published an article 3 years ago examining how parents' careers impact their children's development.

Post-2020 - when many parents were forced to work from home and homeschool their offspring while trying to be productive and attend innumerable Zoom meetings - one wonders what the authors would think of the way forward.

The truth remains that quality time for our children is indispensable to their healthy upbringing.

Yet 2020 also brought financial difficulty to many families such that there is a dire need for parents to remake themselves and to even work longer hours in order to make ends meet.

What's the Solution? We all need to establish and maintain a healthy work-family balance, in spite of the blurring of the lines 2020 brought our way.

Remember that quality undivided attention is more important and healing  for children than a long period of time when you're barely attentive to their needs, listening to their childish inquiries or making eye contact.

In that regard, try to spend quality time with your children without the smartphone which may distract you. Try turning it off.

No, the world won't come to a fiery end if you switch it off.

Turn it off. Breathe. Go outdoors or play with them using some physical items. Teach them a life skill. Make something they want to make. Be present. Focus on being with them. Listen, Learn, and Love them.

You will help them to heal from all kinds of challenges and insecurities while building memories they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

I'm sure that, if done correctly, you will benefit as much as - or even more than - your child.
