Can ACEs Training Help Doctors and Patients During Covid-19?

For more than a year the world has been gripped in the throes of combating the Novel Coronavirus 2019 and over 1 million lives have been lost globally to the disease.

In the face of the fear, anxiety, despair and grief which has arisen, a question for those familiar with ACEs science is whether this body of knowledge can help alleviate the prevailing stressors.

Here is where Hope steps in.

Last month, panelists in an Aces Aware webinar discussed the secondary health effects associated with stress caused by COVID-19. They shared how ACEs Aware training and resources to treat toxic stress can equip providers with the knowledge and tools they need to effectively incorporate ACE screening into patient care, and to better respond to and support their patients during this time.

After completing this webinar, the participant should be better able to:

1. Define Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), toxic stress response, and principles of trauma-informed care.

2. Recognize acute stressors inciting the toxic stress response that affect the physical and mental of patients, including increased rates of ACEs and ACE-Associated Health Conditions.

3. Explain principles of trauma-informed care and evidence-based toxic stress interventions to implement ACE screening and response to address COVID-related secondary health impacts for pediatric and adult patients.

4. Apply the ACEs Aware training and buffering resources to help patients mitigate the effects of the pandemic, including from secondary health impacts.

We hope similar training is made available for our Caribbean medical professionals as we transition into a greater understanding of the key role ACEs science can play to positively impact the people of our region.
