The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), Bureau of Community Health and Prevention (BCHAP), Division of Violence and Injury Prevention (DVIP) is seeking an Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Epidemiologist for the Child and Youth Violence Prevention Unit. The ACEs Epidemiologist will be responsible for supporting data collection, management, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of ACEs and Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) data. The ACEs Epidemiologist will work closely with other programs in BCHAP, other bureaus at DPH, and with external State and community-level stakeholders in an effort to inform data-driven actions to prevent ACEs and promote PCEs. Race and health equity will be at the core of this work. The program is looking for a motivated professional who is team-oriented, but also works well independently, and is passionate about violence prevention and promoting the health and well-being of young people and families in the Commonwealth. Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Leads the gathering of data for ACE and PCE surveillance, including outreach to external state and quasi state agencies.
  • Helps develop, update, and maintain an external-facing ACE and PCE data dashboard.
  • Conducts analyses on ACEs, PCEs, and risk and protective factors using SAS or similar programming language.
  • Drafts and reviews annual reports, legislative reports, presentations, bulletins, infographics, and other communication materials as required.
  • Assists in the execution of evaluation activities, including developing survey tools and focus group discussion guides, and other quality improvement efforts.
  • Works closely with other BCHAP programs, DPH bureaus, and external partners to share findings and inform prevention efforts.
  • Develops trainings on ACEs and PCEs data interpretation and use for community partners.
  • Uses a health equity framework in all analyses, evaluation plans, strategic planning support, and dissemination materials.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of epidemiology, and the methods of statistical and scientific report writing.
  • Ability to establish rapport and deal tactfully with others.
  • Knowledge of epidemiologic research methods and techniques.
  • Ability to utilize computers and applications such as statistical, word processing, and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to manage databases, construct data files, conduct and support data entry, and perform data edits/cleaning as needed.
  • Ability to calculate age-adjusted, crude, age, and sex-specific rates of disease or exposure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience in violence prevention, adverse childhood experiences, and/or positive youth development.
  • Understanding of positive childhood experiences.
  • Experience using health equity frameworks in data analysis, interpretation, and dissemination.
  • Experience conducting formative phase research as well as evaluative research.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong data management and analytic skills.
  • Bilingual language skills.
  • Skilled in time management, and handling projects with multiple stakeholders.

Applicants must have at least (A) four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or technical experience in epidemiology, biology, biostatistics, toxicology, environmental science, environmental health, ecology, public health, chemistry, virology, immunology, bacteriology, microbiology, or statistics and (B) of which at least one (1) year must have been in a professional capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in epidemiology, biology, biostatistics, toxicology, environmental science, environmental health, ecology, public health, chemistry, virology, immunology, bacteriology, microbiology, statistics, or other health-related field may be substituted for a maximum of two (2) years of the required (A) experience.
II. A Master's degree with a major in epidemiology, biology, biostatistics, toxicology, environmental science, environmental health, ecology, public health, chemistry, virology, immunology,, bacteriology, microbiology, statistics, or other health-related field may be substituted for a maximum of three (3) years of the required (A) experience and one (1) year of the required (B) experience.*

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

NOTE: Educational substitution will only be permitted for a maximum of one (1) year of the (B) experience.
