Getting CEU Certified for ACEs Classes & Workshops?

Thank you for asking the same question I have asked.  I've written several universities that used offer certificates in trauma-informed care and gotten no answers.

Beth Grady created this ACEs science tutorial for the healthcare community, and obtained CEUs. I'm sure she could answer your question.

Also, Andrea Ransdell was in charge of getting CEUs for a child sex abuse conference that was held in Davis CA for many years. She could probably help you out, too, Cissy.

Perhaps our allies in the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)-which offer their members "CEU's"- Continuing Education Units, for "on-going" professional education, could share some ideas about this.

Also, possibly Medical Schools [and NIH affiliates] which offer CEU's in their "Grand Rounds" presentations, might also enlighten us about this resource.

I also thought JJIE (Juvenile Justice Information Exchange) might have a "continuing education" accreditation process, as well as other professional groups we interact with......here in the U.S. Perhaps our other ACEsConnection members overseas can share some ideas too. I believe "The Edge" e-newsletter from the UK NHS QI (National Health Service Quality Improvement)-which had subscribers in 56 nations one week after it published its first issue, may offer our ACEsConnection members world-wide some options. The Evidence Exchange Network of Ontario (EENet.ca) may avail our Canadian members similar sources.

Hello Christine, I have made multiple presentations on ACE that are approved for CEs by my state organizations. I get approval through the professional counseling board, social worker board, addiction counseling boards, and marriage and family therapy boards. I was the first in my state to make these presentations but now others are also doing it. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance! I've posted some of my presentations on SlideShare.net.

Dear Denise:
Thanks for responding. I'm going to check out your slides on SlideShare. Do you have to be a therapist or social worker to get approved through those particular boards? I'll check requirements in Mass. I'm presenting to counselors and social workers and the organization having me in is providing CEU's to those who attend. I just didn't know if this is something I can offer, as an individual or if it must be done through a hosting organization.

It's also wonderful to see the work of others and a good reminder that everyone brings a unique and interesting perspective to the research.

I can't speak nationally but regarding CEs for social workers in PA, it is generally an organization or School of Social Work that can provide the CEs for a specific course.  With regard to ACEs and TIC information it is definitely growing in the social work and social work education community.  One of the work groups of the Philadelphia ACE Task Force did a national scan of courses that include ACEs and trauma content.  We are almost done with a toolkit that will have a summary of this scan along with recommendations for how to integrate content about ACEs and trauma informed practice into higher education curricula - one o the things we've tried to do in this resource is point out what needs to be central/core. We'll post it on ACN as soon as its finished.

What a great, original idea, Christine! I like the idea of emphasizing the subjective, lived experience of people with ACE histories. I helped put together a free online training course on ACEs and trauma that offers CEUs for New York State social workers. I am the Director of Family Life Education with the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). www.ncfr.org. We offer a certification program for family life educators and we approve workshops, trainings, conferences, etc. for continuing education credits for Certified Family Life Educators (CFLE).

The work of family life education is focused on the prevention of ACEs via an educational, strengths-based approach to the knowledge, skills, and abilities that people need to function successfully in life including relationships skills, parenting education, sexuality education, resource management, etc., all within the context of family.

That is extremely helpful, particularly knowing that it's free to get a workshop certified (if approved) and that it takes 10 contact hours to equal 1 continuing education unit (CEU)_ to meet CEU credit.

So far, organizations I go through get the CEU approval part done, I just wondered if it made any sense to do it independently.

The credits are for use by people with the CFLE designation. I don't know how many CFLEs there are in your area but approved meetings are posted on the NCFR website so it could provide some promotion for you and your event. One of the reasons we don't charge is because it is a way to promote the existence of family life education as an approach that can be done in independently or in collaboration with social work, therapy, etc.

Dear Dawn and Cissy - 

I have developed a program called Mother2Mother: Parenting through Generations, that will be starting this upcoming new year. The target population is new mothers with children (ages 0-3) who have experienced childhood trauma ACEs. The program aims to break the generation cycle by normalizing the survival coping mechanisms through validation, while instilling new coping skills, providing child development knowledge, parenting and attachment techniques.

As a CFLE-Provisional, I am also member of the ACEs Connections due to their great content.  I would be interested in learning more about the possibility of CFLE CEU availability.

NCFR will approve trainings, etc. if they are relevant to the family life content areas used for the CFLE designation. Providers just need to submit an application to NCFR. https://www.ncfr.org/cfle-cert...continuing-education. CFLE approval is more relevant to offerings targeted to providers rather than the public but if there is a training component to the Mother2Mother program, you could get that approved for CFLE CEUs. If attending the event would be beneficial to a provider of family life education services, it would be appropriate to apply for CFLE continuing education approval.
