Emmy, This is a great video! Interesting he uses the phrase "empathic arousal" for "secondary or vicarious trauma." So sad we still don't have a common language for talking about our emotional states. He did mention Frans de Waal and I can't help but provide the link to one of his great TedTalks where he talks about his empathy research in other species. Guaranteed to make you smile and laugh in points. Relatively recent research is showing that we have SO MUCH in common with all mammals and, of course, primates. Like de Waals says, we are designed to be cooperative and prosocial. The idea of intrinsic selfishness from social Darwinism is finally beginning to fade. Also, we've been acculturated to adopt speciesist attitudes and this research is breaking down those walls though many are resistant to these new truths. It's all fascinating. Thanks again for posting this.
