The students who tell their stories in this documentary are remarkable young people. The the powerful testimony of Helena during legislative hearings helped to pass regulatory reforms in the Ohio public school system . Many feel the reforms were a step in the right direction but are insufficient. They are also not broad enough. The legislation ignores the unregulated use of seclusion and restraint in Ohio's residential treatment facilities for children. Even though advocates have been pushing for reforms for the past 9 years, and the last three governors of Ohio have committeed to addressing this problem, there has been no movement toward addressing the unregulated use of seclusion and restraint. The Ohio Department of Mental Health website states that we are a trauma-informed state, yet the use of seclusion and restraint is tolerated and even promoted in some instances. This video will help to support continuing efforts to address ACEs in Ohio and across the nation. For more information about the efforts to reform public mental health care in Ohio please see the Ohio Seclusion and Restraint Advocacy Toolkit at www.ashlandmhrb.org.
