My friend says Kansas City is "the third trauma-informed city." What does that mean? The third city where the mayor has made a proclamation?
League of American Bicyclists does a "bicycle friendly city program" which sets out very clear criteria for bronze, silver, gold, and platinum standards, based on certain actions related to the 5E's. You get points for various pieces of these:
The 5 E'S
Engineering: Creating safe and convenient places to ride and park [+]
Education: Giving people of all ages and abilities the skills and confidence to ride [+]
Encouragement: Creating a strong bike culture that welcomes and celebrates bicycling [+]
Enforcement: Ensuring safe roads for all users [+]
Evaluation & Planning: Planning for bicycling as a safe and viable transportation option
I'll believe "trauma-informed city" projects when they have an infrastructure to evaluate what people are actually doing to move it forward.
The Arbor Day Foundation does "tree-friendly cities,"
various places do "most livable cities," places do "most entrepreneurial city," there are all kinds of formulas to evaluate an overall city plan. But using one formula across the board would really help people make some progress.
A mayor proclamation??? Yeah...it's one step of maybe 100.
