Reply to "Do we need to change the language of child abuse?"

I appreciate your thorough thoughtfulness Jane.  Yes, I definitely think that changing the language to reflect the other things that harm children and their developing brains, such as the "trauma of family dysfunction," that are not, per se, criminal offenses, could help immeasurably in the efforts to educate and prevent childhood trauma.

When I think about my own family's dysfunction, even after the removal of the perpetrator, I know that the trauma did not end with his removal and has had long lasting effects on every one of us.

I would advocate for changing the terms "child abuse" to "child trauma" and certainly hope that it could make another step toward making this a healthier world for all children.
