Reply to "Best Ideas for 3-5 Minutes of Discussion With the Local Chamber of Commerce"

Hi Tina,

I am an employee of the Chamber Foundation in Kansas City.  This year our Chamber launched a Healthy KC Initiative with five action teams: Healthy Eating, Active Living, Workplace Wellness, Tobacco Use and Cessation, and Behavioral Health.  Our Behavioral Health Action Team was able to put together a report of recommendations providing the Chamber with some actions that will lead to a healthier Kansas City Community.  One of the recommendations was to create a trauma-informed and resilient community.  This summer a local network called Trauma Matter KC (a coalition of more than 95 organizations in KC) came to the Chamber with a grant proposal around creating a Trauma Informed and Sensitive community.  We were able to apply for and receive the grant and are currently working towards creating a Trauma Informed KC.

Some thoughts as you approach your Chamber:

-Focus on how trauma impacts work performance and healthcare costs (there is a fair amount of national data about missed days and if there is local data, I would use local data),

-Address how supervision is different with a trauma informed lens (with some specific examples and a short story)

-Set the expectation that what businesses will see is a positive change in their workforce.

You can also use the work of the KC Chamber as an example.  The Behavioral Health page on our website provides information about the recommendation of the action team.

Good luck!
