Washington to combine child services programs into one department [RealChangeNews.org]

Jennifer Hossler ·
A commission released its recommendations to fix Washington state’s faulty system that delivers services to children and families by breaking up the agency out of the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) and creating a new, independent department addressing the needs of children 21 years old and younger. The proposal would dramatically realign the current system, including the state’s foster care system, by taking the Children’s Administration out of DSHS and combining it with the...

Washington Weighs an End to Locking Kids Up for Truancy [chronicleofsocialchange.org]

Alicia Doktor ·
As a teenager in foster care , Zack Zibrosky was detained eight times, five for running away from the same group home where some of the other kids had a history of aggressive behavior. Running away is considered a status offense, an activity that is prohibited only if you are a minor. In between trips to detention, Zibrosky spent time on the streets. School fell by the wayside amidst all that upheaval. “Kids who are going through this obviously have some type of turmoil or something in their...

We Have to Better Understand What Foster Parents Need [chronicleofsocialchange.org]

By Ross Hunter, The Chronicle of Social Change, October 11, 2019 As a new leader in the child welfare space, I thought it would be worth my while to do some listening before I made any big changes. So I went on a tour all over the state of Washington. I talked to caseworkers, foster parents, birth families, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys and anyone else I could find who had an opinion. I got an earful. “Everything is broken.” “I had a great experience.” “The caseworker never called...

As clinicians around California await the state’s announcement of what this new policy will entail, many are wondering what it takes to integrate ACEs science in a pediatric practice. Meet Drs. Deirdre Bernard-Pearl, R.J. Gillespie and...

When Being Trauma-Informed Is Not Enough

Louise Godbold ·
Trauma-informed care is the new gold standard. For the last several years, Echo has been providing professional development in trauma-informed care but we’re beginning to notice a worrying aspect of the new push to train staff and transform systems. Some human service professionals are seeing ‘trauma-informed care’ as another skill to add to their resume or a box to check off on a grant proposal. But if the information stays with the professionals and is not used to empower survivors, then...

Why Focus on Resilience? 2019 BPT Conference Big Idea Session with Teri Barila

Tara Mah ·
“There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in” -Desmond Tutu. This quote captures the essence of why resilience matters. To Community Resilience Initiative, Resilience is not about “lifting yourself up by your bootstraps” or “bouncing back” from serious harm or injury. To us, Resilience is about self-discovery and self-awareness based on what the ACE Study, neurobiology, and epigenetics tell us...

Wisconsin state agencies end year one of trauma-informed learning community; goal is to be first trauma-informed state

Jane Stevens ·
Here in California, many people think that it’s only liberal Democrats who have a corner on championing the science of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and putting it into practice. That might be because people who use ACEs science don’t expel or suspend students, even if they’re throwing chairs and hurling expletives at the teacher. They ask "What happened to you?" rather than "What's wrong with you?" as a frame when they create juvenile detention centers where kids don’t fight, reduce...

Pediatric Referral for ACE Screening

Michael Arenson ·
Hello, I am a pediatric resident at University of Washington and Seattle Children’s and I am in the process of implementing universal ACE screening in our pediatric clinics. From conversations I have had with clinic leadership, the largest barrier to screening for ACEs is having a clear algorithm of what to do with a positive result. Our integrated Social Worker does not have the time, unfortunately, to address all the counseling, referral, and resource needs that our patients with high ACEs...

Tory Henderson ·
Leckey - That's a great question. Self-care for teachers is a key component and maybe the best starting place for trauma-informed approaches in schools. The Heart of Learning includes a chapter on self-care. The Wisconsin Trauma-Sensitive Schools online modules (not on the list) includes a module on self-care.

Brava for the list. Nicely done. I am thankful for helpful resources. And of course I would add, to that list, learn effective self-care. Personally, I continue to teach Emotional First-Aid, especially for times like these, and always I include the evidence-based 'people's tool' known as EFT Tapping. Easy to learn, apply, remember ...and just as importantly, it's effective . I have taught thousands to use these Emotional First-Aid tools to combat worry and anxious, looping thoughts, before...

I missed the event, but Karen Clemmer and I met on Friday last week and she recommended being connected w/ Ron Murphy and the work he's doing around Trauma-Informed Care and Racial Equity. I tried to find contact info online but no luck. Thank you for any help you can provide!
