Sonoma County is well represented in a new Bay Area initiative to address childcare adversity in pediatric safety net care settings
The Center for Care Innovations (CCI) and Genentech have selected seven Bay Area sites to participate in the Resilience Beginnings Collaborative (RBC). The Resilient Beginnings Collaborative is a 24-month learning program dedicated to addressing childhood adversity in pediatric safety net care settings. As the momentum to spread the word about ACEs and implement trauma-informed care increases, Sonoma County leads the way. Of the seven sites selected, two are from Sonoma County: Petaluma...

Re: Thoughts About Next Steps for Sonoma County ACES Connection
Hi, Allen -- This is terrific! Thanks for thinking about this. My only suggestion would be to have an assets-mapping committee -- two or three people who keep track of what organizations have started to become trauma-informed and where they are on their journey. Or maybe you're already seeing that as part of the membership committee? If not, the assets-mapping folks can be the source to provide information for the membership and best practices committees. Looking forward to talking about...

Allen, This is incredible! I think the messaging is right on. A couple possible additions for your group's consideration: 1. Add a frame that addresses wounded healers/vicarious trauma: "It's not just them it's us," Dr. Robert Anda 2. Add law enforcement (police) to the "more people" frame.

Re: Prop. 64 Stakeholder Group: Prioritize Trauma-Informed Approach to Youth Substance Use Education, Prevention and Treatment
@Allen K. Nishikawa Oh, indeed! The language in the initiative is pretty vague in terms of what types of programs and interventions are eligible for the YEPT fund, but it is clear that the funds are not to be used to supplant existing funding sources. That's not to say that legislators won't attempt and end-run.

Re: Two Truths and a Lie: ACES Training for Providers, Part One
What a potent message, Allen. Thanks for sharing your personal journey. I also used to work with women who were being abused and was left feeling like a failure when they would return to their partners. During that time, I learned many valuable lessons about how disempowering (and personally exhausting) trying to “save” people really is. I’m so thankful for learning that lesson and I apply it almost daily because my natural inclination is to want to take everyone home and make it all better.

Re: Oreos, Apples, Coconuts and Bananas: The Precarious Position of Interpreters. Basic ACES Training for Providers, Part Three
Thanks Holly (and all the other persons who have commented on my posts): I enjoy reading all the scholarly articles and news stories about ACEs, but I also like reading personal stories. To me, ACES is about listening to a person's narrative and understanding that each person deals with their experiences in a special way. It is never a case of "You experienced X, so you must be Y as a result." (By the way, I 'm not suggesting that the incidents I described in my posts are, or should be...

Re: What Do Caregivers Do?
This is great, Allen. I have had experiences with former therapy clients who had some awful parents. They helped care for their parents during terminal illnesses with hopes that the end of life would create some softening. Usually that wasn't the case and it created more heartbreak for the adult children. But you are right, we don't know what trauma the "difficult to live" with have been through and we have to muster as much compassion as possible.

Allen - thank you so much for giving us the image of the red thread... I think stories are the best tool for helping people understand themselves and their feelings. Images like this are lovely to hold and are something we can easily come back to again and again when feelings arise. I look forward to more ideas for supporting resiliency. These are real gifts during our time of recovery!

Allen, You are such an eloquent writer! When you shared this story at the Sonoma County ACEs Connection meeting - I felt like your story provides a poignant reminder of the importance of the "work" we all do. Trauma informed isn't just something we do - it is how we (strive to) operate. Thank you for reminding me and others of the complexities of caring and the value of human connection.
