San Diego Trauma Informed Guide Team (SD-TIGT) Meeting- January 6, 2017 Minutes

Hello All!

The San Diego Trauma Informed Guide Team meeting on January 6, 2017 was very exciting. We had 30 people attend the meeting and had representation from the food sector and the arts sector! Additionally, Barry Pollard inspired the SD-TIGT with the Urban Collaborative's Trauma Informed Journey. Finally, Dr. Hokoda presented results from the SD-TIGT survey and shared out highlights from the Brag Sheet.

Our next meeting is March 3, 2017 from 12:30-2:00 PM.

The minutes below are also attached to this post.

SAN DIEGO TRAUMA INFORMED GUIDE TEAM
January 6, 2017

I. Introductions
A. All participants provided a brief introduction
B. Friendly reminder that as guests of the San Diego Center for Children, we need
to follow their procedures, which requires every guest to sign in and out.

II. Trauma-Informed Journey
The Trauma Informed Journey is a good way to reflect on the work that your
organization is doing. If you want to share your journey please contact Pam Hansen or Amelia Barile-Simon.
Barry Pollard presented on the Urban Collaborative. Please see the blog post, “Trauma Informed Journey - Urban Collaborative Project” on ACES Connection.
Highlights
● The Urban Collaborative project, became a 501(c)(3) two years ago. Currently,
they have 1.5 people working full time. Works with volunteers and focused on
quality of life issues such as health, street art, and infrastructure. Work began in
Oak Park area of the Southeast neighborhood.
● While they have been applying trauma-informed practices to their work, they did not recognize this until recently.
● Multiple interventions engage the community, build trust, and improve confidence in their ability to make a difference
Projects
● Resident Leadership Academy; Provided support and belief in the community
that there was hope for change.
● Improving Health; Food for Less Store on Market St. Plaza; Community
engagement resulting in Kroger investing $1 million in the store.
● Safety; A team of community volunteers using data to address crime
● Beautifying the neighborhood; focused on Euclid and Imperial. Working with
local artists to create murals with resulting in the Health Wall.

In summary, they are adopting the language of resiliency and connecting the work to trauma informed concepts and messages for broader community participation. Being trauma-informed means being hopeful, safe, acknowledging experiences, and building positive interactions.

III. Mobilizing Action for Resilient Communities (MARC) Project Updates
The MARC grant has been helping the San Diego Trauma Informed Guide Team build a sustainable infrastructure. The Brag Sheets provide an opportunity for participants to shine a light on the work they are doing.

● Overall, Brag Sheets show a lot of support for staff development and support for community based work. Organizations are looking more broadly at staff development and recognize that the concepts apply to their workforce and not just those they serve.
● The Brag Sheets also capture ways in which members of the SD-TIGT team connect with the community and residents at various levels.

December Survey Results- How to bring parent engagement into your work
● Used the Annie E. Casey Foundation Report on “Engaging Readiness- Developing Leaders” to establish indicators for community engagement.
● We found that the Guide Team as a whole is developing the capacity to coach and build confidence in the community and strengthen forming authentic partnerships.
● Results from Question: To what extent has participating in the SD-TIGT influenced your work?
● Learning about how TI work is occurring through multiple venues. It is possible
that many of the members are using the SD-TIGT to build relationships, share
success, and help one another. But we are not sure about the extent of
collaboration.

Area of Learning: How are we promoting the SD-TIGT? How are current members defining the SD-TIGT?
○ Review the role/relationship of the individual and what they do as a result
of their work within and outside of the guide team.
