Re: Leaning into Conversations about Race and Trauma

Alicia St. Andrews ·
Aniela, Thank you for bringing your personal and professional reflections and such critical questions to the surface of the group. I also believe the issue of race and trauma needs to be constantly unpacked- at individual, agency, and community wide levels- in order for healing to be possible, and I appreciate the examples you provided on how to question the work we do. This is a great discussion topic for the broader ACEs Connection network. Please consider also posting it as a general...

Yes, very useful to generate a screening tool, even a "universal" screening tool, if that concept is attainable.

I would like to have Strength Based Trauma Informed Leadership Programs included in the resources guide. We are leading the way on integrating trauma informed practices in existing community programs. One example of an intervention we have spearheaded are interactive coping skill cards for children in after school programs. Along with our trainings, teen leadership programs, etc. Thanks for heading such an important group.. All my best, Judy On Fri, Mar 25, 2016 at 9:38 AM, ACEsConnection...

Hi, Alyson, I am looking to spread information that is relevant to all groups to other groups. I think this would be great for the Michigan page. We need to understand that there is a lot of sexual abuse of young girls and boys in all communities rural or urban and I would like to share with our group members how all forms of abuse eventually lead to very negative outcomes. Can I share this or would you on the Michigan group? Thanks Tina Thanks so much!!!

Re: What Philadelphia can learn from its history of citizen-led park projects [Spoke Magazine]

Luke Butler ·
Thanks for posting this Leslie- I think looking at models of how other groups have tackled large issues in Philadelphia can be very helpful as we build our strategy to create a trauma informed city. To me, a few things specifically caught my attention: Planting compelling visions in people’s heads As we begin to engage with more people outside of the trauma sphere, what are the ‘renderings’ of a trauma-informed city we want people to see? In some ways this will be more difficult because the...

Re: ACE Screening as Part of Routine Medical Practice?

This is wonderful news and the kind of legislative activity that could really start building momentum towards routine ACE screening and trauma-informed care in the general health setting. I was also encouraged by this quote within the article: Hentcy says the high noise level of the breakout sessions reflected the energetic engagement among participants, some of whom, before the day was out, made immediate plans to meet locally. That is exactly the kind of activity we hope to generate in...

Hi Jeff, First welcome to the Philadelphia ACEs Group! Here are two specific Philadelphia studies that may be helpful. The first one is The Philadelphia Urban ACE Survey which is a quantitative study that will help to describe Philadelphia ACEs stats and sets the stage for the Pediatrics article . Roy Wade et al from Children's Hospital held several focus groups with 105 Philadelphia youth about ACEs and urban stressors. I hope these are helpful. Alyson

Hello Nick, City Council reacted with much interest, and maybe a little surprise, and (I am hoping) eventually some follow through and action. Time will tell. Their questions to-date are all about statistics, or quantitative research learning. I take the fact that they are even asking questions, as a hopeful positive signal. Daun

This is a very exciting project! Thank you for tackling such an important process and opening it up to all members! A question that is coming up in our city/county ACEs Connection groups is how to effectively engage local Board of Supervisors through awareness building, advocacy, and funding for trauma-informed systems change, with the additional intent of advancing to statewide policy change. Since your project addresses many issues of system/organizational change, I also wanted to make...

Wow, Shoshana! The very thought of what you propose is thrilling! So do we start top-down or bottom-up? I have mixed feelings and experiences: In my old career of Performance Development and Training I know that top-down is typically ideal to gain traction and pull-through of any new initiative BUT it is fraught with political/bureaucratic snags...in my work with teaching meditation to kids and to Student Assistance Counselors (SACs) I can say that they are where the proverbial "rubber meets...

I only recently (3 months) heard about the original ACEs study. From there, I attended an Urban ACEs Task Force meeting as part of the Scattergood Foundation and began taking a class with Dr. Sandy Bloom at Drexel's School of Public Health called Violence, Trauma and Adversity. The reason I joined the Philadelphia ACEs Connection Group is to continue to educate myself on the subject and by that I mean how can we inform others to become trauma informed and resilient? Re: Why are you joining the Philadelphia ACES Connection Group?

"Community is the answer" has to be the answer. No problems occur in a vacuum independent of community, whether that is the problem itself or the ramifications of that problem. This is especially true in terms of ACEs. While it may be easy to say that trauma within a family or adversity experienced by a child is a personal problem separate from the larger community, we know that this simply is not true. ACEs have a long term effect on individual health, which in turn affects population...
