Re: Spiritual Abuse (Rise to Resilience blog repost)
Hi Leona You are right, all abuse is about power and control. Any church that won't let you 'test and approve God's will' (Romans 12:2) is abusive. Having my own experience of spiritual abuse I found Dr. Barb Orlowski and https://www.churchexiters.com/ to be very helpful in not only defining and recognising spiritual abuse, but also in the process of healing from it. Churches are filled with broken hurting people and finding one where the leadership is open to discussion & correction as...

The Struggle Is Real - The Church and Mental Health
Saturday, May 15, 2021 @9:00 AM/EST This transformational conference will enlighten and empower the faith community to become more aware, intentional, and engaging partners in the healing process to an existing population within every house of worship. In my 20+ years of experience, I've learned the core reason why more places of worship aren't prepared or equipped to minister to those struggling with mental health, is because they simply don't know how. This conference will instruct those...

Rev. Clinkscales, Thanks for offering this resource. Is there a webpage with additional information about this Conference? How long is it? Will a recording be available in the future through the (P)ACEs Connection website or some other website? Gratefully, Rev. Marshall Wattman-Turner, St. Paul's United Methodist Church Milwaukie Oregon

Re: The Struggle Is Real - The Church and Mental Health
I don't have a website but the topic centers around how the faith community can play a more vital role in the healing process of those struggling with ACEs. The session should last about 2 hours or less depending on the question and answer session. I will be presenting my years of experience of combining both faith and science. Hope you can join the diverse group of believers for a transformative conversation and experience.

Solano Muslim community remains cohesive despite pandemic (sfbayview.com)
For Muslims, community is everything, especially those who find themselves residents of Solano. And during the pandemic, remaining apart together has allowed them to build stronger attachments in Allah and in each other. The mass testing of COVID-19 has caused numerous dorms and residential cohorts at CSP to be either isolated or separated due to one person testing positive. When groups of residents are moved into quarantine buildings, they are only permitted on average 15 minutes per day to...

Helpful resource... a "checklist" for trauma-sensitive worshipping communities
I am a practical person... and in ministry I am one of those that asks questions like, "Can you give me some examples?" and "How would that look in MY ministry setting?" While theoretical knowledge is helpful, and ACEs science is amazing and interesting in its own right, trauma-informed/trauma-sensitive ministry must actually APPLY that knowledge in order to help anyone. So, as my colleague Rev. Sami Pack-Toner (chaplain, Intermountain Residential ) and I prepared for the Mountain Sky...

Institutional betrayal, institutional courage and the church (baptistnews.com)
To read Susan Shaw, Senior Columnist, article, please click here. Betrayal by trusted people, like pastors, teachers, supervisors and coaches can inflict devastating consequences on victims. According to psychologists who study trauma, betrayal trauma affects the brain differently than any other trauma, particularly when the victim depends upon the perpetrator. Betrayal trauma threatens the very sense of self of the victim, who often cannot easily escape because of physical, psychological or...

First of its kind! A Trauma-Informed Daily Devotional book by Rev. Dr. Chris Haughee
This book is the result of my passion for uniting the insights gained from trauma-informed ministry and God's Word. I have dedicated the last decade of my ministry to better understanding the effect of traumatic experiences—especially those that happen in childhood—on human spirituality, resilience, and our capacity to hope. I believe it has made me a better minister of the gospel and a better follower of Jesus Christ. It has certainly opened up my heart and mind to a greater appreciation of...

“Weave & Cleave” with The Faithful City and May 4, 2023 [Save the Date]
I am at my desk, writing this short blog, which I must have done four months ago. I am asking myself both questions, “What’s wrong with you?” and “What happened to you?” Laughter… Well, I should only ask the latter one by training. However, for the last several months, I intentionally tried to answer “What’s right for you?” convincing myself to do more self-care, reflection, and self-regulation. Whisper to me… “Good job!” Smile then, deep breathing… As the founder of The Faithful City (TFC)...
