Men and Trauma

 

Everyone knows that trauma isn't a joke – it messes with your head and changes the way you look at life. But dudes have it especially tough – there's pretty much nowhere for them to offload their pain because crying and expressing emotions is seen as weak and unmanly. This whole culture of masculinity is really messed up and keeps guys from talking about or dealing with their hurt.

Men often bear the brunt of traumatic events, but too often these effects are pushed aside in favor of a facade of strength and stoicism. This unwillingness to recognize and address trauma can lead to deadly results—men die five years earlier than women due to their failure to seek medical help when sick or injured.

In addition to ignoring physical symptoms, men may turn to addictions or even attempt suicide as they attempt to cope without addressing their underlying issues.

To prevent such tragedies, we must first learn how to effectively recognize symptoms connected with trauma and provide men with the necessary tools they need to manage their emotions in a healthy manner.
