Child Tax Credit - help spread the news to families with children
Spread the news to families in your community: even if they've never filed taxes, even if they have little or no income, they may be eligible for the 2021 Refundable Child Tax Credit. They have until May 17, 2021 to file with the IRS to receive this credit: $3600 for each child ages 0-6; $3000 for children 6-17.

Help families get Monthly Cash Payment through expanded Child Tax Credit
Action Is Needed Now! To help families cover their children’s basic needs, Congress expanded the Child Tax Credit for 2021 as part of the new America Rescue Plan. The IRS will be sending out monthly checks to families with children, starting in July. Families can receive up to $300 a month for every child ages 0-5 and $250 a month for every child ages 6-17 living in their household. Families do not need any earnings to qualify. Important post! As an MD who has reviewed the literature, even though they list childhood adversity as a risk factor, it is often omitted from many epidemiological studies of suicide. I am not aware of any good data on the prevalence of childhood abuse and neglect in completed suicides or attempted suicides in youth or adults.

Reducing child poverty is the best primary prevention strategy for child abuse and neglect. Every impoverished family lives inconstant stress. I cannot imagine the ability to manage unbridled child energy in that circumstance.

Re: New Injury Data Released by the California Violent Death Reporting System (CalVDRS) Project
It is disappointing that both the homicide and suicide fact sheets tabulate deaths in children and youth less than 18, and refer to"family stress or conflict" but do not go to the clinically relevant and prevention important detail to tabulate specifically the presence of child abuse or neglect.

This document and its format is useless for any understanding of child homicides due to abuse or neglect. They are not specified in the data. Foremost the deaths reported are a distorted sample and very incomplete. Deaths from natural and/or accidental causes are mixed with other deaths without reason or explanation. There is no table identifying fatalities due to abuse or neglect. I recommend this post be taken down.

The new CCFSS system may provide a foundation for truly getting complete epidemiologically reliable and valid data on child fatalities due to abuse and neglect in California, but this report demonstrates it is not ready for prime time. The DPH has taken the flawed, confusing, incomplete, and miscatagorized data from the former FCANS system and squeezed it into the CCFSS format. This is inappropriate, confusing and misleading. This post should be taken down for some rethinking.
