Anyone using MHSA or other funds in innovative ways to address ACEs or trauma?

Karen Clemmer ·
Question: Please share examples of innovative uses of existing funding to address ACEs and trauma. For example, Mental Health Services Act has a funding category called "Innovative Projects" which might be a way to fund ACEs and trauma related efforts. Are you aware of any CA communities that have found ways to utilize MHSA or other funds in unexpected ways - that have the potential of addressing trauma and ACEs? See below and attached for more background re MHSA. Background: The CA...

We are pleased to report that SB 428 (Hurtado) passed out of Senate Health and the bill is in the Senate Appropriations Committee. This bill is co-sponsored by the California Medical Association and Children Now. This bill would expand coverage of ACEs trauma screenings beyond Medi-Cal, to patients covered by commercial health insurance plans by requiring plans to reimburse for the service when it is provided. We would like to request letters of support from your organizations in support of...

Request for advice in finding an ACEs Career Path

Kevin W Norton ·
Hello: I'm a recent MPH graduate who is interested in working on ACEs. The more I learn about the effects of trauma and chronic stress, the more it changes my worldview and makes me want to do something about it. Part of the reason why I moved to California in 2019 was to get involved in the incredible work that you're doing around ACEs. I'm currently living in Sacramento and working in contact tracing, but would appreciate any advice that you can offer to help me find a career path in the...

Research Question for ACEs in public school

Matthew Fleming ·
Hello, everyone! I am in need of some assistance. I am working on a study and need to find a medium to large public school district in California that uses ACEs to assess students for trauma. I would prefer to work with middle and high schools, but I am deep in this work and hit a snag. If you are in such a district, or know of one, please let me know. Thank you!

Re: Anyone using MHSA or other funds in innovative ways to address ACEs or trauma?

Kay Reed ·
Mind Matters: Overcoming Adversity and Building Resilience was added to the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) list in May. Being on the list allows contractors in LA County to use MHSA funds to purchase the program materials when working with their populations to address trauma and reduce toxic stress. LADMH had previously included Love Notes on their PEI list as well.

Has your organization been able to access ESSER funds for SEL programing?

Kay Reed ·
Hi all- I'm curious about anyone has connected with their local district to provide SEL or other mental health supports to address the tsunami of student trauma. We have developed an ESSER Toolkit to help organizations learn about ESSER and reach out to their schools. I've heard of other states starting to push out RFPs but I've not heard anything about California. Thanks!

Re: Has your organization been able to access ESSER funds for SEL programing?

Alicia Williams ·
Hello, I am in California and my district created one and then two additional FTE positions for Coordinators of Trauma Informed School Practices where we focus on SEL, wellness, and environments; all three positions are funded through ESSER. Hope this helps.
