Complaints from workers vary from “How many stories of torture will have to I hear.” “It feels like I am spitting at a forest fire.” “After 12 years in the field, I am now on blood pressure medication.” This year the Cal WORKs Training Academy featured a workshop on compassion fatigue...

Opinion: What to do with harassers outed by #MeToo? Can’t throw ’em all in jail [MercuryNews.com]

Today, the San Jose Mercury News posted an oped I wrote: Opinion: What to do with harassers outed by #MeToo? Can't throw 'em all in jail It's based on a much longer essay I posted in December: We can't stop sex harassment by firing or incarcerating our way out; we can stop it by using ACEs science. I think it's perfect timing, given the amazing speech that Oprah Winfrey gave last night at the Golden Globe awards... ...as well as comments and speeches by other award presenters and recipients.

Foster youth in California schools have a rate of chronic absenteeism far higher than the general student population, according to data available for the first time from the state’s Department of Education (DOE). Statewide, the rate of chronic absenteeism — or when a student is absent from school for any reason for more than 10 percent of the days they were enrolled in a school — is just under 11 percent. When it comes to foster children in California schools, 25 percent are considered...

Inside the fight over how to address San Francisco's 'state of emergency' for black student achievement (latimes.com)

Black students in San Francisco would be better off almost anywhere else in California. Many attend segregated schools and the majority of black, Latino and Pacific Islander students did not reach grade-level standards on the state's recent tests in math or English tests. A local NAACP leader called for declaring a "state of emergency" for black student achievement, a problem the city's school board acknowledged. "The problem cannot be reduced to one sickness or one cure," said Rev. Amos C.
