Workshop in Oakland, CA: Adverse Childhood Experiences: Health and Mental Health Consequences

Drs. Vincent Felitti and John Preston will do a presentation about ACEs from 1-5 pm, Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, at Kaiser Center Auditorium, 300 Lakeside Drive, 2nd floor, in Oakland, CA.

The course is sponsored by the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Mental Health Training Program. This is the course description:

[The workshop organizers say that this workshop is not limited to licensed professionals, but anyone who is interested. Seats are limited, and people are signing up quickly, so if you're interested, sign up now!]

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), such as those experienced by children growing up in environments that include drug abuse, domestic violence and/or mental illness to name just a few, are early, stressful life events that have been identified as contributing factors to health problems.  Dr. Vince Felitti will describe his landmark ACEs study that examined the health of over 17K patients seen in primary care at Kaiser Permanente, San Diego. This study revealed that, as the number of ACEs that each person experienced increased, so did their tendency to develop a variety of health and mental health problems, from obesity to cancer to suicidality.

The second presentation, by Dr. John Preston, will focus on the neuropsychological and psycho-neuro-immunological factors that are involved in the formation of health and mental health disorders that are caused by ACEs.  The neuroendocrine and the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system will be described in their association with the breakdown of the immune system and the formation of hyper- and hypo-cortisolism and inflammation.  This interface between early stress, and mental and physical health represents the need for an integrated approach to all health care and calls for medical providers to be more psychological in their approach and psychological service providers to be more attentive to health issues.

Hi, Lisa -- It seems to be designed for licensed professionals, but I don't know if that means they limit attendance to licensed professionals. I've sent an email to find out, and will let you know.   View This Comment Sincerely, ACEsConnection https://www.pacesconnection.com To adjust your email notifications for this site, please update your notification settings. Hi Jane,
I get the sense from the registration form that this is only for licensed professionals - is that your understanding, as well? I would like to attend, but I'm not one of the license designations they list and my work is primarily in studying the research around mental health, addiction, secondhand drinking, childhood trauma, etc., and then simplifying aspects of it for various audiences.
