Roundup on people who are homeless, efforts to assist them: Haircuts, HUD grants, pets, mentally ill, young adults

 

Ventura County's homeless bring in their pets for free shots, licenses (VenturaCountyStar.com) -- Danna Aten, who is staying at a hotel in Ventura while working at a nursing job in Oxnard, stopped by Catholic Charities in Ventura so that her service dog, Memi, could be vaccinated. In all, Ventura County Animal Services vaccinated 28 dogs and licensed 27 of them.

Modesto homeless treated to haircuts as part of DoubleTree event (ModestoBee.com)-- The free haircuts were part of the DoubleTree Hotel’s Random Acts of Kindness competition, in which the hotel’s managers and supervisors were split into teams and competed to do the most good in the community.

New resource opens for homeless young adults (SanDiegoUnionTribune.com) --

Four recently homeless young adults will live for up to two years at the “House of Self-Sufficiency”, where the nonprofit Doors of Change will help them leave behind their traumatic pasts and lay the foundation for a brighter future.

Housing first approach may best serve mentally ill homeless population (ChronicleofSocialChange.org) -- A University of Chicago study that found that no matter the amount of counseling treatment given to homeless mothers transitioning into affordable housing, mental illness and distress only receded after significant time in permanent housing.

HUD grants $15 million to local homeless programs (SanDiegoUnionTribune.com) - The $15 million was the first tier of HUD funding requested by San Diego County. The Regional Task Force on the Homeless is waiting to hear about an additional $5.2 million in requested funding.
