New Resources from the Mycelium Youth Network [myceliumyouthnetwork.org]

By Mycelium Youth Network, May 2020

Mycelium Youth Network prepares youth in the Bay Area -- who are most vulnerable to and already feeling the effects of environmental racism -- for climate change. We use a merger of indigenous environmental traditions that emphasize youth environmental stewardship and relationship building alongside a rigorous STEAM curriculum that focuses on practical hands-on skills for climate resilience and mitigation that youth create and implement in their homes and local communities.

MYN is already a pioneer in youth climate resilience work. We’re named one of a handful of organizations doing this work in California (International Transformational Resilience Coalition press release). We were also recently featured in Estuary Magazine and We Rise productions.

We are excited that we are offering emotional support classes, two of which use traditional indigenous frameworks for healing from a member of the Apache nation and another from the Opata nation to frontline youth. All funding directly goes to support our socio-emotional support and gardening classes for youth:

Ask a Doctor Teen Edition: We are pleased to offer our community, Ask a Medical Doctor, Teenage edition with Dr. Luz Felix-Marquez. This webinar is directly geared for teenagers, parents or guardians of teenagers, and educators. Dr. Felix-Marquez will provide an overview of COVID19, how it affects the body and provide best practices for social distancing. She will then open up the webinar to youth question and answers. Youth questions will be prioritized in order to create a safe space for youth to ask questions. This will be an online webinar on Zoom. [Please click here to register.]

Vegan Vitality: Foraging and Cooking in the Bay area: Nervous about either foraging in the Bay area or cooking delicious vegan meals? Want to add a few recipes to your repertoire? We got you covered! Our adventure will begin with Phoenix Armenta, our community herbalist and teacher. They will show you how to forage nasturtium, chickweed, dandelion, mallow, plantain in the Bay area. They will then take us through how to make dandelion butter and how to dehydrate those plants for a delicious green smoothie mix. Our culinary community teachers, Marilyn and Lauren will incorporate those ingredients into a vegan Peruvian Soul Food fusion dish - tallarines verdes (Peruvian pesto spaghetti) with fried oyster mushrooms (fried chicken-style). One week before the class, we will send participants the ingredients so that they can cook along with us. This is a family friendly class! [Please click here to register.]
