New Data Category on COVID-19 Pandemic [kidsdata.org]

From Kidsdata, February 23, 2021

Kidsdata introduces a new category to our site, COVID-19 Pandemic.

The category features data that describe child and family well-being in California during the pandemic. We will regularly release new data over the coming weeks. Click on the hyperlinked text below to access data that are currently available.

As the pandemic unfolds, caregivers reflect on:

The data cover California and seven regions within California. At the state level, findings are broken down by family income level, race/ethnicity, and the presence of a child with special health care needs in the household.

Key findings from the latest data:

Education, Health Care, and Social Activities
47% of California caregivers reported that helping their child with education was a stressful experience and increased tension in the home.

Supportive Services
11% of California families began using social safety net programs during the pandemic.

Positive Childhood Experiences
64% of California caregivers reported that their child had opportunities for fun at least once a day.

The data come from a national questionnaire, Family Experiences During the COVID-19 Pandemic. The questionnaire was designed by The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA), and Tufts University Medical Center, Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE). An oversample in California was funded by the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health (LPFCH) and the Essentials for Childhood Initiative (EfC), led by the California Department of Public Health, Injury and Violence Prevention Branch and California Department of Social Services, Office of Child Abuse Prevention. We hope this new category will help policymakers and practitioners quantify the tremendous impact on children and families and identify areas of need. The best way to stay informed of the data releases in this category is by re-confirming your email subscription to Kidsdata News or signing up for Data Alerts, where we will always announce the latest updates.
