Most parents are worried school closures will leave their students behind, survey finds [edsource.org]

Four out of 5 parents of California public school students say that school closures from the coronavirus are making them feel stressed, and 9 out of 10 are worried their students will fall behind academically, according to a survey released Wednesday.

The survey of 1,200 parents statewide for the nonprofit student advocacy organization Education Trust-West also found that 44 percent of parents said that their child’s teacher had contacted them personally, and fewer than a quarter had been provided  access to or contact with a school counselor.

At the same time, however, parents gave good grades overall to this point, with 81 percent saying their child’s school or district is doing an excellent or good job providing learning materials and instruction during the closure. They’ve done this by email (63 percent), text messages (35 percent) and personal phone calls (26 percent), plus other means, like robocalls.

I keep reading this worry, and realize that we've overly socialized parents that schools are more important than they are. This is not so! Parents have the most influence on their children's learning. Why do we believe that school is better than home?  I think we need to work at this perception being the exception, rather than the rule. People, including children do not learn in the context of fear, at school or at home. While we are all struggling with the unknowns of COVID-19, its the perfect time to focus on relating to and communicating with eachother,  learning about skills needed at home, and how to take care of ourselves and others when the need arises. These are powerful social skills that build resilience and strength. We rob parents and children of deep familial relationships when we sidestep the needs for strengthening families by putting the responsibility on "school." The most important role schools can play during this pandemic is providing food for families in need. People are driven to learn things they need to know for survival. We cannot underestimate the amazing creativity and power of the emotional spirit, driven to help. It's going to be okay. We will be new, but we will get through this together ❤.
