Books! Educational Videos! Documentaries!

Here's a place where you can review books, educational dvds and documentaries that relate to ACE concepts or trauma-informed practices. "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world." ~ Nelson Mandela

This is a book I wrote addressing the needs of traumatized children in public school settings. Given the

overwhelming number of children with "aces too high", it is importnat for  teachers recognize some

common characteristics of traumatized children. Reaching and Teaching Children Who Hurt is jam-

packed with information about the effects of trauma on learning and behavior. Reviewers

agree that it "adeptly translates theroy and research in the impact of trauma on children into practical

strategies for use in educational settings" (Betsy Mc-Alister-Groves, Chiild Witness to Violence

Project).  The book is easy to read and  lends itself well to a "book club" format or as background

information for professional development workshops. The section on integrating a trauma sensitive

perspective throughout a school will appeal to administrators. And there is a list of books for social

workers or counselors to use as bibliotherapy.

Good morning, Elizabeth

Thanks for your feed back about "Reaching and Teaching". I'm always glad to hear that it is giving teachers and support staff ideas about how to engage and support their students. I'd love to hear questions teachers may have or others topics they would like more information about.

Susan

Susan,

I wanted to let you know that we are using your book as the foundation for several Collegial Learning Circles in the Rochester City School District.  After providing some introductory training to all staff we found that there were school staff who were interested in going deeper into this topic.  Your book has served as a great resource.  I've been meeting mothly with the teams and going chapter by chapter.  The groups include an elementary school, high school and alternative program.  All the groups have found your book to be very accessible and appreciate the concrete strategies that you provide.

Thanks for this great resource!

Elizabeth Meeker
