Re: Inflammation! Who knew???

Bill Lipe ·
I just realized that I did not give any info on what I'm doing to reduce inflammation. And thinking about it, I may need to write it up offline and post it when I've got it put together. I think I'll put it in timeline format, summarizing for space and reading efficiency. Follow up will have further details if anyone wants to read them. Fortunately the dietary interventions are tasty! The supplements are readily available at any local mega-mart. I don't sell any of them, so no profit to me.

Re: Mad Matters: A Critical Reader in Canadian Mad Studies by LeFrançois, et al. (2013)

Chris Engel ·
Hi Steve, Totally agree with everything you said. If psychiatrists were to make the real changes necessary in the DSM it would have major ramifications on other sectors of society like the legal system and the military; it would ignite lawsuits and force the VA to give out benefits, money it doesn't want to spend. That's why the military gave Martin Seligman a $34 million dollar no-bid contract to implement his pathetic "positive thinking" model. A soldier sees his buddy blown up and he's...

Re: Mad Matters: A Critical Reader in Canadian Mad Studies by LeFrançois, et al. (2013)

Chris Engel ·
Yes, there are states/communities that claim to be trauma-informed but are not practicing it. They have documents up on their websites touting how trauma-informed they are and then when it comes down to a consumer’s experience they just retraumatize sufferers over and over again. There are no words for this great disappointment. And then people wonder why people with mental health challenges don’t seek treatment. The challenge with the trauma-informed movement is to change people’s hearts, a...

Re: Resilience and Mental Health: Challenges Across the Lifespan by Southwick, et al. (2011)

Chris Engel ·
Book review: The concept of resilience emerged about 40 years ago when psychologists considered the differing life trajectories of children exposed to similar traumatic life events and asked why some developed psychosocial pathology and some did not. It has since expanded to describe the adaptive responses to trauma across the human life span that usually maintain function but that can fail and result in conditions such as post–traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The film "Quest–The truth always rises" is not available online yet. Santiago is working really hard to get it into theaters and schools and prisons. If anyone wants to connect with him, I can help make that happen. If you google Quest, another movie shows up, so he said to always put in "Quest–The truth always rises." I would love to help him get it seen by folks who are working with ACEs and trauma informed care. Thank you for asking. Rona

Jo Lyn, thank you. The producer does need help with marketing, but he is wanting to get the right person...someone who really gets what the film is about and understands the importance of it. Happy to connect with you. I'm a friend of his, and my daughter had the teacher in the film who saved his life. Rona

If someone is interested in connecting with Santiago Rizzo, the film maker and the person the story is about, you can reach him at srizzo@gmail.com . He is looking for support to get this deeply moving film out into the world. I feel like it can raise much needed awareness to the struggles of the people we all see on the streets, and in prison, and the kids who are sent to the principal's office on a regular basis. It is a film filled with compassion and reality. Thank you for your interest...

Jo Lyn Cornelsen ·
Rona, Is this film created from a book? Once the film has a platform of 10,000 people... it can most likely go anywhere and become anything... just like books. If not already in the works, I would encourage the producer to have a launch party, inviting 1000+ trauma informed coaches, therapists and educators to opt in for reduced price viewing. Education is the often the first step toward significant change, so I would also encourage creating an online educational course or masterclass...

Thank you so much Jo Lyn. You can see from his web site https://www.thetruthalwaysrises.com/ that the film as been around for over a year and has received some awards. The acting is really good. I don't know all of the issues he faces, but he hasn't been able to get distribution, perhaps in part because of the content, but I'm not sure. I will pass on your message to him. Thank you so much.

Thanks Cissy! Such a powerful book for families and in the article, Seth shared that his wife (also a veteran) wrote a book "Why Is Mom So Mad?". Staggering to know 1 out of 3 troops returning home develop PTSD, and less than 40% seek help... We (society) must do more to help those suffering heal.

Vincent J. Felitti, MD ·
War trauma may be the trigger and not the primary cause. Some years ago I was on a government committee to look into why there was so much PTSD in Gulf War 1 when there were only 170 hours of ground combat, GW1 being all aerial bombardment. I remembered from my days as an Army doctor how the Army was a wonderful metaphor for a supportive family, especially if you didn't have one. GW1 was also the first time an all-volunteer Army was put in the field, the Draft having been discontinued. There...

Redefining Trauma: Understanding and Coping with a Cortisoaked Brain

I am honored to introduce my newly published book, which aims to help people understand the normal impacts of intense or ongoing stress. The book uses metaphor to help understand our complex brains, and to have some distance while considering some potentially emotional and challenging topics. So many people are struggling with unhealed, hidden wounds from toxic childhood stress. For some, the pain is obvious. Others might look outwardly strong, capable, and in control. However, unhealed inner wounds cause needless suffering and can lead to a dizzying array of psychological, medical, and functional problems. Fortunately, there is hope for healing—even decades after traumatic wounding from ACEs occurs—enabling us to be 100% there for ourselves, our families, and others we work and...
