License to Parent, a Move the World Documentary (2018) by George Siegel

George Siegel wrote, produced, and directed this award winning one-hour film.

From the film's website: A documentary film that focuses on the lack of any requirements needed for parenting. The film looks at people's stories--men, women, and children whose paths in life were set by the family to which they were born.

The film shows that if we can raise the standard of parenting, we can make our world a better place in which to live.

I'm looking forward to viewing the film and then asking George some questions. Look for the forthcoming interview here.

I watched the film and I was disappointed, perhaps because my hopes were way too high.  I long for universal parenting education and I hoped this film would help move us in that direction.  My discouragement comes from the lens through which this seemed to be portrayed; that teens (and other irresponsible people) were having babies and not taking care of them properly.  Statistics were not accurate.  For example, I looked up the statistics on teen pregnancy and they are at the lowest rate since the 60s.  One of the individuals went off about how abstinence should be the only birth control method taught.  There was another individual who was very down on parents.  My perspective is that parents are not educated about child development, what to expect at various ages in terms of social-emotional development.  Parents have only their experience to fall back on and most parents come from a place where the method was (if not spanking, yelling) timeout and consequences/punishment rather that connecting (relationship- based to assure the child feels safe, seen, soothed and secure), then teaching.  Lots of empathy.  Expectations that are reasonable for the child's age, etc.  Maybe this will reach some audiences, but it will not reach the audience I'm hoping we will reach.  I do agree with his goal and admire his passion!
