Do more cops in schools make them safer? New study looking at NC schools says no. [newsobserver.com]

RALEIGH - A new report looking at security in North Carolina schools is challenging the belief that putting more police officers in schools will make them safer. The study of North Carolina middle schools found no relationship between increased funding for school resource officers and reduction in cases of reported school crimes. Kenneth Alonzo Anderson, the report’s author and an associate professor at Howard University, said legislators across the country should consider the findings...

Passing the Torch: Increasing Access to Support the Whole Child From Birth to Five

Another great resource from the 2018 ACES Connection conference in San Francisco: This was a panel with four individuals that "do varied work around trauma in prenatal, infant care and early childhood. Julie Kurtz, the Co-Director of Trauma-Informed Practices for Early Childhood Education at the Center for Family & Child Studies at WestEd, started off by giving a tour of the neurobiology of trauma." ...

ACEs Science in Education: The Next Big Challenge is Systems Change #ACEsCon2018

This was a WONDERFUL ACES Connections resource from the 2018 ACES Conference around education: "One of the first sessions of the 2018 ACEs Conference: Action to Access discussed the barriers and opportunities for increasing access in the field of education. The main question was: "How can one achieve systematic changes within the field of education?" The session was moderated by Michelle Flowers, a passionate advocate, and the principal of Kinney High in Rancho Cordova, CA, which is part of...

Rockstar Recognition

Benchmarks’ PFE would like to take a moment to “shout-out” one of the Rockstar members of our ClevePart Partnership. Alison Clark is the Permanency Planning Program Manager at Cleveland County DSS and one of our amazing trauma champions. Alison recently received the Local Government Credit Union Innovation Award for 2018 for her efforts in a local initiative she developed to boost foster parent recruitment and adoption efforts in the county. The innovative initiative that landed Alison the...

More Collaborations = Safer Communities!

At Partnering For Excellence, we stress the importance of collaborating and working together to ensure the best possible care for those that we serve. Oftentimes, we have multiple departments/organizations that act as "silos" and don't communicate with one another despite usually caring for/treating the same populations in similar capacities. As an initiative, we work to bring together county level Department of Social Services, Managed Care Organizations, and local providers. By doing so,...

Finding Resilience in the Midst of Hurricane Florence

Avis and her brother, Bruce, have seen some hard knocks in their lives. At 60, she's his sole caretaker. She's taught school, worked as a receptionist, always worked, or wanted to work. Since she started caring for her brother, full-time work has seemed hard to find. He was born with autism 51 years ago. They share her little house in Pamlico County, North Carolina, where she now hopes to be called in to substitute teach, and he looks forward to her home cooked meals. Their lives revolve...

Hurricane Florence first responders receive free trauma/resilience training

In a webinar offered this morning by Elaine Miller Karas , executive director of the Trauma Resource Institute in Claremont, CA, leaders from several North Carolina ACEs Connection communities affected by flooding and other damage by Hurricane Florence learned more about trauma response and how to better help their communities find resilience. Karas, who was delivering her Community Resiliency Model (CRM) training at Duke University in Durham, NC, offered the free training and provided...

Psychosocial Recovery

This is a very relevant article as we begin to rebuild here in North Carolina after the destruction of Hurricane Florence. The discussions around disaster relief have already begun to occur but one aspect is oftentimes forgotten in the rebuilding efforts: psychosocial recovery. "Stern says everyone who has ever dealt with disaster relief knows that the psychosocial recovery is the most import aspect of relief that is widely ignored by the public. " It is imperative to address not just the...

The Best Defense Against a Hurricane is Community (CityLab) + Update from Wilmington, NC

We are just beginning the clean up and recovery from Florence. The effects of the storm will be with us for the foreseeable future. But our resilience is showing. Neighbors checking on one another, organizations delivering emergency supplies, and people sharing hot meals prepared and donated by volunteers. We will get through this. https://www.citylab.com/amp/article/570193/?__twitter_impression=true

Trauma & Pregnancy Effects

We have known for some time now that trauma affects the physical and mental health of individuals, but a recent study shows that even unborn fetuses can suffer from trauma exposure. The linked study found that infants born to women who had been previously exposed to trauma in their lives gave birth to male babies with significantly lower birth weight than women not exposed to trauma. This should not come as a surprise to anyone but it does reinforce the general consensus that trauma exposure...

Shasta County, CA using videos to educate, activate & celebrate

Here are four great YouTube videos highlighting some of the work happening on the ground in Shasta County. They are motivated and mobilized. According to one of the providers speaking towards the end of one video - patients/clients had positively "profound" responses to learning about their ACEs - and they felt empowered to do what they could do to not have their children have the same experience. More videos available here .

Navigating Adult ACES

Often we blame adults for their behavior or decision making without taking time to realize that they have untreated trauma that is affecting their lives. We all focus on children and have made great strides to identify and treat ACES but the system isn't perfect, which means sometimes it fails to identify a child in need. These children then grow up with trauma that affects their mental and physical health which makes relationships with others oftentimes difficult. This untreated trauma can...
