Trauma informed pain treatment

The Weitzman ECHO Pain faculty published this in late 2019 as part of their effort to bring concepts of trauma informed care to the treatment of chronic pain.  Misconceptions about the nature of the opioid epidemic (hint: its the trauma) have informed an ineffective approach to reducing the risk of accidental prescription opioid overdose over the past decade, as the FDA 2019 warning said: "The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of serious harm in patients who are physically dependent on opioid pain medicines suddenly having these medicines discontinued or the dose rapidly decreased. These include serious withdrawal symptoms, uncontrolled pain, psychological distress, and suicide."
