Re: schools/classrooms using trauma-informed practices?

Steven Dahl ·
Greetings - I am grateful to Jane for sharing this information. I will share a little bit here about what my original intent was in creating the course (Creating Compassionate Schools), how it was designed, and "what's next" or pending in terms of professional development. First, as we all know, we are all taking a "it takes a village" approach. This applies to all professional fields, not only to traditionally defined K-12 education. That said, it was about 5 years ago that I learned about...

Re: How are schools incorporating trauma informed practices, if they are at all?

Leisa Irwin ·
Lee ~ You hit on a key point. No one should be surprised that we don't "punish" the students. We use a restorative justice model to teach students how their actions/behaviors impact the community as a whole. It's time intensive, but it has helped prevent suspensions and expulsions, which has helped create stability in the lives of our students. While I'd like to believe that everyone was on board with the restorative justice model, I know that for some of the staff who had been in the school...

Re: Has anyone surveyed teacher attitudes about trauma-informed care as a way to collect some baseline data?

Sandy Goodwick ·
Does your survey consider teacher self-care from the trauma experienced via workplace bullying in education? Does your district have a workplace bullying policy? A year ago, the AFT and Badass Teachers Association conducted an unscientific, national survey ("Quality of Work life Survey") which indicated teachers were deeply stressed... That survey lef to an amendment in ESSA (co-authored by Senators Booker and Baker) so that school district communities can apply for Title II funding in order...

Eric Rossen, PhD, NCSP ·
HI Elizabeth, I have done a couple trainings in Virginia focused on this - I can share contact information for the organizers or share the evaluation results of the talk. I typically share a google drive full of resources; and my edited book Supporting and Educating Traumatized Students is designed to provide simple strategies for many educators to implement or consider. Feel free to message me if you want to chat more. eric.rossen@gmail.com

Trends in Trauma-informed Organization Development

Pamela Denise Long ·
I am curious to know how members of the group are seeing trauma-informed care being implemented in local/state education agencies or even private education/community support agencies that look at collective impact. Particularly, in addition to reading/math strategies, technology, curricula-- as observed in your work--which improvement content/strategies/competencies are emphasized by local/state education agencies with high federal programs funding/high utilization of free-reduced lunch?

Re: For parents who want to talk to schools

Renae Dupuis ·
Hello Ariane, I have some suggestions: Chapter 4 of The Connected Child (attached with permission) shows the disarming of fear to create felt safety in what I think is an approachable way that is easy to share with teachers. An Article of "Trauma Informed Classrooms" from Adoption Advocate (attached with permission) gives some practical framework to what is needed in a classroom setting TBRI® Animate: Toxic Stress & The Brain - is helpful as well. I provide resources for Southern...

Re: PPT for High School Students explaining ACEs

Kevin Denvir ·
If you've had a chance to watch the film "Paper Tigers" they clearly taught their at risk teens about ACE's. From the film I'd say this had a profoundly positive effect. Obviously take the best advice out there but understanding in a judgement free setting and with therapeutic support available is surely a positive step for many young people. It explains why they are not "bad" and their behaviour is adaptive. This new understanding can increase choices. Hope this helps and good luck. :-)

Early Reader Chapter Book To Teach Kids Resilience: Milo and the Wisdom of the Sea

Jenna Martin ·
Greetings everyone, I'm wondering if you might be able to help me. I'm the author and creator of an early chapter book series. The first book, "Milo and the Wisdom of the Sea" has been published and on the market, while the other four books are in varying stages of production. I'm curious if you would have ideas for greater distribution: radio shows, email distribution lists, publishers etc. I have a social media presence including Twitter , a blog , YouTube channel etc. But, the work and...

Would Anyone Like a Free Resource to Enhance Emotional Wellbeing for Educators

Robyn Hussa Farrell ·
Hello colleagues. I'm reaching out to see if anyone would like to participate in a pilot study looking to improve emotional wellbeing for educators through an evidence-based toolkit that includes improving social / emotional wellness and mental health literacy outcomes. You / your district would simply receive the toolkit at no cost and participants could attend (via email engagement campaign each week). At the end of the 12 weeks, participants would be asked to complete a feedback survey.
