Trauma-Responsive New Zealand

NZ response to second wave of COVID ~ NZ people before the Election

Thursday 13 August 2020

On Tuesday 11 August 2020 at 9.15 pm (New Zealand time), Jacinda Adern announced that 4 people from the same family living in South Auckland had tested positive for COVID.

The NZ government led by Jacinda Adern placed Auckland under Alert Level 3  from 12 noon on Wednesday 12 August 2020 and the rest of NZ on Alert Level 2.

Auckland is the largest city of NZ with a population of about 1.6 million. It makes up about 33% of the NZ population.

Today (Thursday) a further 13 people tested positive for COVID. Ashley Blomfield announced that those who have tested positive for COVID will be placed into quarantine where they will have access to 24-hour access to medical care.

Some may see this as an invasion of the rights of those tested positive. It is NOT. It is a necessary intervention to protect both those with COVID and to protect the rest of the people of NZ from the inadvertent spread of COVID.

Jacinda Adern will make an announcement at 5.30 pm on Friday 14 August 2020 to inform NZ of the next steps we will need to take to fight the spread of COVID.

As a nation, we are updated daily. The information is clear and concise.

There is fear but that fear, I believe has been minimised due to decisive actions to intervene hard and early combined with clear, concise, easy to understand information and instructions.

NZ has its general election this year. Our election date was Saturday 19 September 2020. Our parliament was about to be dissolved. NZ parliament's dissolution will have to be delayed.

People will take precedence over the election.
