Chicago Special Screening of The Chicago Maternity Center Story May 23

On May 23 at 7 PM, Chicago Volunteer Doulas will present a special screening and panel discussion of The Chicago Maternity Center Story , an important documentary recently restored by Kartemquin Films. Birth center and home birth delivery for low risk women, doulas (trained labor support coaches) and breast-feeding support all help to optimize birth outcomes for mothers and babies, prevent re-traumatization of women and families, and set the stage for secure  attachment relationships, which help build resilience and protect us from adversity.  The Chicago Maternity Center offered trauma-informed care (before we were calling it that) in its service delivery as well as in the content of its care.

Event

For more than 75 years, the Chicago Maternity Center provided safe home deliveries for Chicago mothers. However, when modern medicine's attitude toward home birth changed and funding from Northwestern University declined in 1974, the center was forced to close. This film interweaves the history of the center with the stories of a young woman about to have her first baby and the center's fight to stay open in the face of the corporate takeover of medicine.

The issues in healthcare continue.  After the screening, a panel comprised of filmmaker Sue Davenport, Sharene Miller, the mother who allowed her birth to be filmed, Shirley Moore, midwife and Chicago Maternity Center consumer, and Jeanine Valrie Logan, student midwife and doula extraordinaire, will field questions. Sarah Simmons, local home birth midwife, will moderate.

Don't miss a rare opportunity to see a fine documentary and support a local organization, Chicago Volunteer Doulas, doing birth justice work with vulnerable communities!
