Listen To The Interview Excerpt with Dr. Grossman >
In a groundbreaking initiative developed at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, babies born dependent on opioids are no longer placed on medicated assisted treatment and taken away from their mothers. Instead they are placed in the main hospital unit under the care of their mothers, who receive lessons and guidance on how to recognize and respond to their child's symptoms. The program has generated national interest, showing promising positive health outcomes for mothers and babies, as well as teaching valuable skills to families and mothers.

In this symposium, multiple experts present challenges and barriers unique to women with opioid use disorders, and babies born opioid dependent.

Dr. Charles Atkins will lay the framework of the day by exploring the larger opioid crisis and issues specific to women, pregnancy, the peripartum period, & opioid use. He will discuss the challenges of co-occurring substance use & mental health problems, Medication Assisted Treatment, the importance of psychosocial and behavioral supports.

From Matthew Grossman, MD , learn about an innovative approach that questions the status quo of opioid treatment, and radically decreases the length of hospitalization while simultaneously promoting parent-child bonding. The study has generated national interest, is being replicated in other hospitals, and may well become a national standard.

Jordana Frost, from March of Dimes will discuss preconceptive health, including the One Key Question, a method of pregnancy prevention screening. Finally, a panel of community agencies will highlight best practices used for treatment and services available to mothers and children.

Throughout the day attendees will be given multiple hands-on opportunities to put what they've learned into practice through the use of case studies. And speakers and panelists will take questions and provide coaching throughout the day and in the afternoon wrap up.
