Trauma-Informed Practices: Protecting Child Survivors of Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse in Family Courts

This daylong Saturday conference will feature a keynote address from California Woman of the Year Ana Estevez, whose 5-yr-old son Piqui was murdered by his divorcing father just 8 days after Ana sought protection for her son from the family court. Courageous young adults who reported abuse as children and were ignored by family courts will share their journeys of living with and healing from trauma. Retired former judge DeAnn Salcido will present a workshop explaining how judges view domestic violence and child sexual abuse, while Jody Barnes, LCSW, will guide participants through trauma-informed mindfulness work.

This event will provide an opportunity for domestic violence advocates, legal and mental health professionals, policymakers, journalists and anyone who cares about child safety in the family courts to network and learn from one another. Regular rates are $90 for parents and $150 for professionals. Registration includes a continental breakfast and a catered lunch.

Unstructured social time at the beach is built into the weekend's schedule on Sunday from 10a-2p, since so few conferences ever allow time to heal and connect.

A semi-formal Champions for Children's Justice Awards Reception will be held the preceding night, on Fri. Oct. 4th from 6pm - 9pm, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A few select journalists, lawmakers and child advocates will be awarded for their leadership in working to protect children of divorce/separation in the family court system. Reception tickets cost $125 and include Hors-d'oeuvres and an Open Bar. The reception is a fundraiser for the Center for Judicial Excellence. Visit www.protectiveparentsatthebeach.org for more details. NOTE- The dates of this event have changed, so please check the event website for the updated list of speakers on these new dates.
