Shared Trauma- The Parallel Process of Being Trauma-Informed

Shared Trauma “is when a practitioner experiences the same events or experiences as their clients” and with white supremacy being such a dominating factor in the day to day lives of black people, it can be assumed that racism impacts all black people regardless of their profession, social, and economic status. And while many trainings are geared towards eliminating biases, there is a gap in training for building Black’s resiliency in the face of white supremacy. This gap is significant to people in the helping profession; as according to Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, in a survey of Black Bachelor degree holders polled between 2006 to 2019, many Black people major in areas concentrated in lower-earning fields. This combined with African Americans being more likely to experience adverse childhood events and work with high-risk populations, points to the increased risk of African American experiencing vicarious trauma and burn-out. This workshop examines the intersection of trauma, race and healing. It will specifically focus on how to develop professional excellence through the parallel process of being trauma-informed.
