  • How to Overcome Kids’ Bias: Research suggests that by the time kids start school they prefer kids who look most like themselves. Yarrow Dunham, Ed.D., from Yale University and his team studied whether young children preferred information that favored the group with whom they identified. In order to overcome this bias, Dunham says parents should ensure their children have access to books, toys, games, and movies that feature a diverse group of people and guide their kids in ways that supports inclusion.
  • Kids More Likely to Retaliate Than Reciprocate? Researchers conducted a series of studies with 330 children to examine whether children understand the concept of paying back those who help you (reciprocity). Results suggest that kids are naturally quick to act on their grudges and slow to return favors, but they believe children can learn how to give back. After hearing a story about reciprocating, the kids were much more likely to return the favor to the person who was kind to them, suggesting reciprocity can be taught.
