Aspiring Therapists Learn on the Ground at Casa Pacifica [VCStar.com]

Aided by a presidential initiative, the Casa Pacifica agency has doubled admissions to a program that prepares psychologists to work with abused, neglected and emotionally troubled youth. Brian Bantel, 33, is a member of this year's class. The intern from Arizona plans to specialize in the treatment of children who have been traumatized by abuse and neglect, a specialty of the Casa Pacifica Centers for Children & Families. "I do best with a trauma population or a lot of conduct-related...

Editorial: Casting light on a haven of hope (vcstar.com)

Tucked into a rural corner of Ventura near Harbor Boulevard and Olivas Park Drive, the River Haven tent community is remarkably entering its 13th year at the site. In fact, Ventura County’s first sanctioned homeless camp has been such a quiet success that it’s easy to forget it’s still there. Fortunately, a group at Buena High School, members of Temple Beth Torah in Ventura and others in our community have not forgotten about River Haven. They banded together to devise and complete a project...

This is what work-life balance looks like at a company with 100% retention of moms [Quartz]

For 33 years Patagonia has had an on-site child care center that bears little resemblance to what anyone might imagine corporate on-site child care looks like. It is run by teachers, some of whom are bilingual and trained in child development. Learning takes place outdoors as much as in. Parents often eat lunch with their kids, take them to the farmer’s market or pick vegetables with them in the “secret” garden . Patagonia buses school-aged kids back to the company’s headquarters, allowing...

Erik Sternad: The tragic final act of domestic violence (vcstar.com)

Me: "Ventura County has the highest rate of reported domestic violence in the state when compared with any county with a population of more than 60,000." Neighbor: "You have to be kidding me. Here, in Ventura County?" I've probably had this same conversation about 50 times over the past couple of years. As the executive director of Interface Children & Family Services, one of our county's leading nonprofit groups confronting family violence, I talk a lot about this vital public safety...

Why Are Companies Abandoning On-Site Day Care? (bloomberg.com)

On any given workday, up to 85 children are running around Patagonia's Ventura, Calif., headquarters. The outdoor retailer offers on-site day care and after-school programs for kids up to 8 years old for its 550 employees. "You cannot miss the children on-site," said Dean Carter, a vice president of human resources at Patagonia. "I hear a kid laughing and playing, and there's something that almost alleviates stress. It just melts off," he said. Patagonia estimates the program's cost at $1...

Skype with your doc? 'Telehealth' shortens wait times for vets in Ventura County (spcr.org)

Military veterans in Ventura County needing specialty medical care are increasingly seeing their providers through a Skype-like app. The Department of Veterans Affairs calls it "telehealth." Certain outpatient clinics have a "telehealth cart" that allows a doctor in a separate location to actually perform many of the tasks usually done in-person. These include stethoscope attachments, an otoscope, and an opthalmoscope among others. In recent years the V.A. has struggled with such access...

Putting the Power of Self-Knowledge to Work [NY Times]

Thirty years ago, the Nobel Prize-winning novelist Doris Lessing gave a series of lectures, later published in a book, “ Prisons We Choose to Live Inside ,” in which she reflected on the brutality in the world and asked how individuals and societies could evolve into something better. It’s a sobering book, but Lessing is hopeful — and her main source of hope stems from the capacity of human beings to study themselves and learn from their own behavior. “I think when people look back at our...
