Garden a natural way for therapy (mpacorn.com)

The scrub-covered lot at 1722 Lewis Road in Camarillo may not yet look like a garden, but in a few months, succulents will fill one section and newly minted gardeners will be tending to a variety of plants in other sections. The Ventura County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 at its Dec. 12 meeting to lease the land to Ventura-based nonprofit Turning Point Foundation for a new job training program called Growing Works. Turning Point offers programs for people living with mental illness.

Landmarks in ashes, and of memory, confront fire victims in a traumatized Ventura (latimes.com)

Sparked in Santa Paula and pushed by Santa Ana winds, the Thomas fire streaked along the southern slopes of Sulfur Mountain. Consuming an acre a second, it crossed 11 canyons before reaching eastern Ventura late on the night of Dec. 4. Now the clock is running. Most insurers cover two years of rent and give homeowners two years to replace their belongings. Those who are displaced feel the pressure. With all the damage and the work that lies ahead, they anticipate a bottleneck of demolition...

California's 'ban the box' law to help ex-felons find jobs after release (vcstar.com)

At issue is that one little box on an employment application — the one that requires the applicant to check “yes” if she or he has a criminal history. Knowing they are likely to be screened out, job-seekers who would have to...

Ravaged by fire, Ventura tries finding Christmas spirit and a way forward (latimes.com)

Residents said what makes moving forward difficult is not just the devastation that the fire left but the fact that everyone knows someone who was directly harmed by the fire.
