UC Davis ACEs Connection Community

Dear UC Davis community member,

Research shows that the majority (62%) of Californians have experienced at least one type of childhood trauma as identified in the groundbreaking Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study. Further, a significant percentage of Californians have experienced as children more than two (23%) and more than four (16.7%) of the identified traumas.

The data paint a sobering picture for the UC Davis community – a significant percentage of students, staff, and faculty within our community have likely experienced childhood trauma. Without proper support, these traumas affect both emotional and physical health over the course of a person’s lifetime.

But there is good news – as members of the UC Davis community, there are things we can do to:

  • Prevent childhood trauma;
  • Intervene and offer support to those currently experiencing trauma; and
  • Help individuals build resiliency and heal after experiencing trauma.

A group of us have come together to create a centralized space to share experiences and build collaborations around these issues. We know that are many people across the UC Davis community who are already working on these topics or providing care in communities that have been impacted by childhood adversity.

We invite you to join the UCD ACEs Connection group, where you can network, share research and practices and learn about:

  • How trauma affects individuals throughout the lifespan;
  • Important news and updates about trauma-informed care and resilience-building techniques;
  • Relevant research, programs, and discussions happening throughout the UC Davis community (and the Greater Sacramento region);
  • Best practices and tools for creating trauma-informed work places to better support students, staff, and faculty; and
  • Special events offered at UC Davis and the Sacramento region.

You are receiving this announcement because we have learned of your potential interest in this initiative from various sources (word-of-mouth, attendance at past ACEs Connection events, research interests, etc).  This is a one-time blast email. You will not receive further emails in the future, unless you reply to this email indicating your preference.*

Please consider joining us by going to acesconnection.com/g/uc-davis-aces and JOIN the group (found under “About This Group”). This should take no more than 2-3 minutes of your time. Once you are a member, you can share Posts about how you are contributing to building a Resilient UC Davis, share information in the Calendar about relevant events happening in the community and ask questions or post discussion topics in the “Ask the Community”.

In early 2018, we plan to host two meetings, one at the Sacramento campus and one at the Davis campus, to publicize more widely our group efforts.  We hope that these meetings will include panel discussions from UC Davis and community experts and those with lived experiences, as well as town hall-type discussions to plan next steps and initiatives.

Please feel free to forward this message to students, colleagues or coworkers who might be interested.

We look forward to hearing from you.
