Central Library exhibits explore concept of inherited trauma related to the Armenian Genocide [latimes.com]

The Downtown Central Library will host two simultaneous art exhibits that explore the concept of generational trauma associated with the Armenian Genocide. The main exhibit, "Nonlinear Histories," is co-curated by Ara and Anahid Oshagan as well as Isin Önol and features the works of seven artists who examine their generational ties to the Armenian Genocide by reimagining inherited artifacts. It will run from March 17 through May 6. The collections are inspired by the theory of "postmemory"...

Black Kids Don’t Want to Read About Harriet Tubman All the Time [nytimes.com]

Atlanta — I’m pretty sure I hadn’t even wiped the sonogram goop off my belly before I rushed off to pick out dresses and books for my unborn child. I was on a mission: My daughter was going to need all the pink dresses and all the books with brown babies. Finding adorable dresses was easy. Finding children’s literature with pictures of children of color was not. Books with white children and, like, ducks, were de rigueur, which I guess was fine for parents who were having white babies or...

Once It Was Overdue Books. Now Librarians Fight Overdoses. [nytimes.com]

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. — The director of the public library in this Hudson Valley town calls his assistant and security guard “Starsky and Hutch.” They have been trained to spot signs of overdose in library patrons — paleness and shortness of breath when it is heroin; sudden collapse when it is fentanyl — and administer the drug naloxone. They patrol the bathrooms and stacks at the Middletown Thrall Library, checking on anyone who is dozing. “It’s easier to call the police, to wait for E.M.S.,”...

The unexpected role librarians are playing in Sacramento’s homeless crisis (sacbee.com)

For many of Sacramento’s homeless men and women, the public library is a haven from harsh weather, a primary source for bathroom facilities, a place to rest from the stress of the streets. But as the homeless crisis deepens in the capital city and around the country, libraries increasingly are seeing people with untreated mental illnesses that cause them to act oddly, or put themselves or others in danger. Now, for the first time, employees of Sacramento’s library system are taking training...

The Mottoes of our Libraries Should be #LoveNOTHate #ListenWithYourHeartAndFeel [lowriderlibrarian.blogspot.com]

Note from Alicia: If you have not had a chance to check out Max Macias' blog, lowriderlibrarian.blogspot.com I recommend it. He is one of the most fierce, authentic and outspoken advocates speaking up against white privilege in libraries. He also edited an amazing book Librarians With Spines: Information Agitators In An Age Of Stagnation which I highly recommend. We need these voices in our movement to become Trauma Informed so that we can move to places of authenticity and safety in our...

Vocational Awe and Librarianship: The Lies We Tell Ourselves by Fobazi Ettarh [inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.org]

http://www.inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.org/2018/vocational-awe/ "Vocational awe describes the set of ideas, values, and assumptions librarians have about themselves and the profession that result in notions that libraries as institutions are inherently good, sacred notions, and therefore beyond critique. I argue that the concept of vocational awe directly correlates to problems within librarianship like burnout and low salary. This article aims to describe the phenomenon and its effects on...
