With graduation season upon us, I have been thinking a lot about one of my favorite graduation speeches. It’s the speech that Shonda Rhimes, creator of Grey’s Anatomy, gave in 2014 at Dartmouth College. She references the typical expected advice from a graduation speech: “Follow your dreams. I am an attorney with Disability Rights CA and am working to help transition those with developmental disabilities from the Sonoma Development Center back out into the community. You guys and gals are so lucky to be there. I would give my shirt, pants and my car to be a part of your team. It is kind of hard kind-of going this alone but good thing I am passionate about this. Hi Tina I am the Parent Resources Director at CPI (Child Parent Institute). Now that everyone has given you the evidence based etc formal info, I will add the informal info. I think what helped us be such enthusiastic implementers of the Family Strengthening model was that we did some staff trainings that were a fun way to learn about this model. I used some activities that helped staff think about what factors they had and how they could see that in themselves and in the families we serve.

Re: Trauma Informed Care in Hospital Settings - is it missing?
Thank you for sharing this story, Karen! A friend of mine just posed on facebook today a similar experience of feeling despondent in a hospital setting. His two year old son is a patient at the Children's Hospital in Oakland, and is undergoing very painful procedures. My friend was struggling to be a strong, supportive parent as his tiny, dear child suffered. Shouldn't "care" include best efforts to mitigate trauma as it occurs and certainly to be sensitive to compounding trauma from the...

This is a great resource, Holly! I found Observation #2 to be especially salient, given what we've learned from the Center for Effective Philanthropy's survey about the impacts on nonprofits from the 2017 wildfire response. Our county really does need to be strategic and focus on building the resiliency of the supports for our County's most vulnerable *before* the next disaster.
