Stop Dreaming & Start Doing

Lori Chelius ·
With graduation season upon us, I have been thinking a lot about one of my favorite graduation speeches. It’s the speech that Shonda Rhimes, creator of Grey’s Anatomy, gave in 2014 at Dartmouth College. She references the typical expected advice from a graduation speech: “Follow your dreams. Listen to your spirit. Change the world. Make your mark. Find your inner voice and make it sing. Embrace failure. Dream. Dream and dream big..." And then she says, “I think that’s crap.”

Strategies 2.0 [strategiesca.asentialms.com]

By Strategies CA, September 4, 2019 Healthy families are the bedrock of strong, vibrant communities. When the skills and abilities of professionals and their organizations grow and strengthen, they can create bigger, more sustainable changes in their communities so that all families can be healthy. Organizations working with families want to support as many people as possible and make a bigger impact but their budgets and resources fall far short of their aspirations. With no-cost trainings...

Students with no schools. Teachers with no homes. Will Sonoma schools ‘get back to normal’? [sacbee.com]

Alicia Doktor ·
SANTA ROSA - Teacher Linda Severs lost her school but not her house. Parent Matt Todhunter lost his home but not the school his children attended. And Debra Sanders, who has spent the last six years providing school services for homeless families, suddenly found her own family in that same classification. Northern California’s Oct. 8 wildfires were among the most destructive in U.S. history, and in Sonoma County, they uprooted an entire school system. As the fires raged, nearly all of the...

Syrian Children in a state of Toxic Stress

This is a huge public health concern that could lead to irreversible damage to an entire generation of children. Save the Children shares, "Millions of Syrian Children could be living in a state of "Toxic Stress" due to prolonged exposure to the horrors of war." I have attached the Report, Invisible Wounds produced by Save the Children if you're...

Grace Harris ·
Hi Tina I am the Parent Resources Director at CPI (Child Parent Institute). Now that everyone has given you the evidence based etc formal info, I will add the informal info. I think what helped us be such enthusiastic implementers of the Family Strengthening model was that we did some staff trainings that were a fun way to learn about this model. I used some activities that helped staff think about what factors they had and how they could see that in themselves and in the families we serve.

Re: Trauma Informed Care in Hospital Settings - is it missing?

Holly White-Wolfe ·
Thank you for sharing this story, Karen! A friend of mine just posed on facebook today a similar experience of feeling despondent in a hospital setting. His two year old son is a patient at the Children's Hospital in Oakland, and is undergoing very painful procedures. My friend was struggling to be a strong, supportive parent as his tiny, dear child suffered. Shouldn't "care" include best efforts to mitigate trauma as it occurs and certainly to be sensitive to compounding trauma from the...

Re: Addressing Trauma and Building Resiliency as Comprehensive Disaster Planning and Response

Lena Hoffman ·
This is a great resource, Holly! I found Observation #2 to be especially salient, given what we've learned from the Center for Effective Philanthropy's survey about the impacts on nonprofits from the 2017 wildfire response. Our county really does need to be strategic and focus on building the resiliency of the supports for our County's most vulnerable *before* the next disaster. On a related note, I recently came to a section in Dr. Nadine Burke Harris's book, "The Deepest Well", where she...

Please see attached for the 10-24-18 meeting. Thank you @Michelle Dominguez I have a suggestion , as a way of accelerating the ACEs movement - would it be possible to have folks introduce themselves and share what brings them to the meeting - personal or professional (or both!)? Maybe they could also share what is happening in their work/world related to ACEs, trauma informed work and building resiliency? Additionally, I am wondering if folks who are participating on behalf of their...
