Study unearths patterns in San Jose homeless population's ACE scores

Laurie Udesky ·
Photo by Terabass/ CC-SA-3.0 It was around 2010 that Dr. Angela Bymaster was seeing a disturbing pattern in the histories of her adult patients. She already knew that patients who saw her at the Valley Homeless Health Care Program in San Jose, CA, where she worked at the time, were homeless or recently homeless. What was most troubling to Bymaster was knowing that their current precarious existence could have been prevented. Dr. Angela Bymaster “Over and over and over again I was hearing the...

Syrian Children in a state of Toxic Stress

Elizabeth Najmabadi ·
An article posted by BBC News captures what the children of Syria are experiencing and how many of these children don't know anything but war. This is a huge public health concern that could lead to irreversible damage to an entire generation of children. Save the Children shares, "Millions of Syrian Children could be living in a state of "Toxic Stress" due to prolonged exposure to the horrors of war." I have attached the Report, Invisible Wounds produced by Save the Children if you're...

Who Cares for the Caregivers?

Allen K. Nishikawa ·
(A written version of a presentation given at the February Sonoma County ACEs Connection meeting.) Sonoma County ACEs Connection is trying out a new meeting topic focusing on personal stories. There are three reasons why personal stories are useful and powerful. The first is that people like and learn from stories. People learn in different ways, and Powerpoint presentations aren’t for everyone. The second reason is that we’re hoping to involve more members by encouraging them to share their...

Allen K. Nishikawa ·
Jane: With all the positive press about Triple P, it is useful to note that some folks have concerns about the principal authors. His argument seems nuanced and even a bit arcane (it does not criticize Triple P per se, but that the authors are writing scientific articles which promote the successes of the program, attempt to silence the critics and do not disclose that they have a substantial financial interest in the sales of the books and materials) I cannot speak to the accuracy of the...

Re: Addressing Trauma and Building Resiliency as Comprehensive Disaster Planning and Response

Lena Hoffman ·
This is a great resource, Holly! I found Observation #2 to be especially salient, given what we've learned from the Center for Effective Philanthropy's survey about the impacts on nonprofits from the 2017 wildfire response. Our county really does need to be strategic and focus on building the resiliency of the supports for our County's most vulnerable *before* the next disaster. On a related note, I recently came to a section in Dr. Nadine Burke Harris's book, "The Deepest Well", where she...

Re: Notes from our 9/23/15 meeting

Just a note about this sentence: Several people mentioned boundary issues – that the teachers shown in the film did not always exhibit healthy boundaries. A suggestion was to have a panel of speakers after each showing, preferably of education-focused professionals. Albert Einstein once said: Without changing our pattern of thought, we will not be able to solve the problems we created with our current pattern of thought.

ACEs screening is about building relationships, says early adopter

R.J. Gillespie ·
Whether or not to screen for ACEs in primary care is an important debate—and I hear and respect the passion from both sides of the argument. I fall in the “pro-ACE assessments” camp, but with some important caveats. I think that assessments for ACEs are dramatically different from screening for autism or developmental delays. In my opinion, assessments for ACEs in primary care should be primarily about building relationships.
