The Power of Photovoice

Today I was able to sit down with Salvador Sanchez Strawbridge, who is apart of the Santa Rosa Violence Prevention Partnership. Sal shared with me how his life experiences lead him to where he is today and how he is giving back to his community. Sal did not have an easy childhood and was affiliated with a gang at a young age. I personally do not know a lot about the dynamics of a gang and he was able to provide me with a little more insight. He shared that being apart of a gang filled a void...

Replacing detention with meditation

Often when a child acts out at school they are sentenced to detention or suspension. The Robert W. Coleman Elementary School decided this was no longer going to be the case. Instead of detention this elementary school created the Mindful Moment Room. This room was created for children to go and talk through what had happened and provides them with the space and time to practice breathing and meditation. Studies have shown that mindful meditation could improve a person’s attention span and...

“The Self-Healing Communities Model (SHCM) builds the capacity of communities to intentionally generate new cultural norms and thereby improve health, safety and productivity for current and future generations.” This model was implemented in Washington State and was successful in improving rates of many interrelated and intergenerational health and social problems by investing in the people at risk. They worked to reduce and prevent the root of the issue being Adverse Childhood Experiences...

Any brand new guidelines should be proposed and adopted later. The current version...

Social Innovation and Resilience: How One Enhances the Other by Frances Westley

“Part of building resilience in complex systems is strengthening cultures of innovation.” “In 1972 Bunker Roy and a small group of colleagues set up the Barefoot College in Tilonia, Rajasthan, India. Their vision was an interesting and catalytic one, joining old and new, traditional and radical. Informed by the teachings and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi—giving the poor and the dispossessed the means to produce their own necessities—the Barefoot College trained the poor to build their own...

How Poverty Alters the Young Brain by Eric Jaffe

“Behavioral scientists have made some truly groundbreaking insights into the cognitive costs of poverty in recent years. We now know, for instance, that scarcity puts a huge strain on our mental resources—the equivalent of stripping 13 points off our IQ, or losing a night’s sleep—making it that much tougher to handle daily tasks or decisions. That’s just one of many findings pointing to the same conclusion: poverty literally alters the way you process the world.” Click here to read the full...
