Re: Social and Emotional Education Bill - will this help school communities?
Yes! The Compton lawsuit is huge. The momentum is building! As we've covered in previous stories on the education front, school wide transformation is most effective when social emotional learning, restorative, and trauma-informed approaches are interwoven into every level of the system, from janitor to teachers to students to parents to principals. From what I've observed, Restorative Justice (RJ) holds offenders accountable in powerful ways that traditional sentencing does not. That is, the offenders would take responsibility, take part in facilitated gatherings to see what can be done to make amends, and work towards reconciliation. One of the most significant results of Restorative Justice is that the repeat offender rate is significantly lower than following the usual system of punishment--- and it also actually saves taxpayer...
