States Produce a Bumper Crop of ACEs bills in 2017—nearly 40 bills in 18 states

A scan done in March by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) through StateNet of bills introduced in 2017 that specifically include adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the text produced a surprising volume of bills (close of 40) in a large number of states (18). The Violence Against Women Act Has Expired. What Does That Mean for the Programs it Funds? [psmag.com]

From jail to treatment: Helping get the mentally ill on track (sandiegouniontribune.com)

In San Diego County, help for mentally ill offenders can come from several sources — including the county and the courts — but demand is high, resources are limited and people, especially those living on the street, can fall through the cracks. Last month, the county Board of Supervisors approved a three-year spending plan for new and existing programs, some of which focus specifically on people with serious mental illness who are also in the criminal justice system. The funding — nearly...

She only had a week left to go before her bed opened up, but the two weeks she toughed it out waiting on the street kept her in harm’s reach,”...

Getting on the Same Page: Developing a Strategic Plan

Clare Reidy ·
Plans change. That was a key lesson learned by the San Diego Trauma-Informed Guide Team (SD-TIGT) as the group worked to hone a strategic plan. The network had begun as a grass-roots collaborative, and members wanted to preserve that sense of openness and inclusion. At the same time, with Harmonium, Inc., as the backbone organization and the MARC grant as an impetus, the network also needed structure, goals and clearly defined roles. Already, the Guide Team’s focus had shifted; what began in...
